Stan Lee was born as Stanley Martin Lieber on December 28, 1922. His parents immigrated to America and settled in NYC. Stan Lee has one younger brother named Larry, who helped with some of Stan Lee’s future creations.

Stan Lee was an American comic book creator, famously known for his work with Marvel Comics. He created characters that are staples to American pop culture. The characters were so popular that they would grow from comics into an epic movie franchise.

Books by Mark Twain were an escape for young Stan Lee
The Great Depression was a burden on Stan Lee’s father, who owned a tailoring shop. Financial instability and debts made life harder for the family in their small one-bedroom apartment. As a child, Stan Lee lost himself in books and heroes.
A few of his favorites included Mark Twain, H.G. Wells, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, and Jules Verne. Later in life, he gave his mother credit for being the main booster of his confidence as a child.

Stan Lee wrote obituaries for a news service in New York
At the age of 16, teenage Stan Lee graduated from DeWitt Clinton High School located in the Bronx. With the general economic hardship, it was hard finding a job during the time, so he took a series of odd jobs.
[Photo Courtesy: Queens Hospital Center / wikimediacommons.com ]
He worked as an office boy, wrote press releases for the National Tuberculosis Center, and worked for a news service writing an obituary. He would quit the obituary writing gig, thinking the job could have a negative impact on his mood.

Stan Lee begins his journey in publishing with an odd coincidence
During the late 1930s, a job would finally open up for Stan Lee. He would spot an ad in the newspaper about a job at a publishing company that caught his interest. When he got the job, he assumed that he was the only person who applied.
Coincidentally, his uncle, Robbie Solomon, mentioned to him earlier that the publishing company he worked for needed a new employee. The role was a gofer (a type of assistant) position in a company that was at the McGraw-Hill Building.

Stan Lee was paid $8 per week when he worked as a gofer
It’s not confirmed if the two companies were really the same, but it turned out that Stan Lee had a family connection to the publishing company he would spend decades working with. His Uncle Robbie got him in contact with Joe Simon, the man who could hire Stan Lee.
[Photo Courtesy: Captain America Free Image / Pixy.org]
The publishing company was Timely Comics, and Joe Simon would co-create Captain America with Jack Kirby. Stan Lee worked at the company as a gofer for $8 per week in 1939.

Stan Lee asked Timely Comics for a promotion from his gofer role
At Timely Comics, duties such as coffee runs, refilling ink jars, and proofreading went to Stan Lee. His most active task on the job would be getting the staff lunch. It was a small start, but Stan Lee carried out his duties as the job required.
[Photo Courtesy: Stan Lee Circa / wikimediacommons.com ]
Stan Lee became bored with his tasks and brought up the idea of a promotion to his boss. To satisfy Stan Lee, for the time being, Timely Comics worked out a plan where Stan Lee could direct his writing skills.

Timely Comics needed to find Stan Lee something to do before the staff went crazy
Stan Lee would hang around Timely Comics doing miscellaneous activities to fill his time. The tasks they assigned to him were often mundane and short-lived, so Stan Lee had a lot of downtime. He stayed around to soak up knowledge, and he would tag along with Joe Simon and Jack Kirby when they went bowling or had lunch.
Stan Lee had so much downtime that he would sit in a corner of the art department and play the ocarina. The instrument sometimes drove the staff nuts, so Timely Comics was more than happy to find the gofer something more to do.

Stan Lee makes his comic debut by writing the text filler
In 1941, Joe Simon and Jack Kirby created Captain America. The company often worked with outside talent for their publishing. Art and scripts were done by a freelancer, or the comic shop Funnies, Inc. they worked with. Timely Comics decided to task Stan Lee with writing the text filler at the back of the comics.
[Photo Courtesy: Marvel Entertainment / YouTube ]
Postal Service required subscriptions to have at least two pages of the actual text. This is how Stan Lee got his comic writing debut with “Captain America Foils the Traitor's Revenge” on August 1, 1941.

Stan Lee serves his country in WWII
Joe Simon and Jack Kirby would leave Timely Comics. Stan Lee became an interim editor for Timely Comics. Around this time, the young talent Stan Lee also joined the WPA Federal Theater Project. The project was funded by the government to secure jobs for people in the theater industry during the Great Depression.
[Photo Courtesy: Marvel Entertainment / YouTube ]
He didn’t get to indulge in his role for too long. Stan Lee would be enlisted to serve the country as the U.S. fought in WWII. He would be in the Signal Corps up until 1945, then, Stan Lee would return.

The army code name for Stan Lee was ‘playwright’
While in the armed forces from 1942 to 1945, Stan Lee still leaned on his natural inclinations. He wrote manuals, training films, and slogans for the army. Most of the jobs he performed were either administrative or technical jobs.
The army did give Stan Lee some time to explore opportunities, like making cartoons for the army magazines around that era. He became known for his creative talent. He was designated to be classified in the military as ‘playwright’.

Upon returning from the military, Stan Lee experimented with different genres of content
Once Stan Lee returned to America, he found that Timely Comics changed their name to Atlas Comics. He rejoined the company ready to share new stories with audiences. Stan Lee inevitably gained a wider set of experiences while serving the country.
[Photo Courtesy: Marvel Entertainment / YouTube ]
He wanted to experiment with different genres that could expand the narrative of the characters he created. Stan Lee started to dabble in writing romance, sci-fi, horror, and comedy genres. His new goal would develop into a shining aspect of his impact on culture.

Atlas Company was in danger of bankruptcy
Dan DeCarlo Lee and Stan Lee would take over a comic strip called “My Friend Irma” that ran from 1950 to 1955. The comics were based on a popular radio show of that time starring Marie Wilson.
[Photo Courtesy: stan lee by luigi / wikimediacommons.com ]
While this comic strip was going on, Atlas was in financial trouble. The company would go bankrupt in 1957 and need a solution to get out of a difficult situation. This was the moment where Stan Lee would officially start to shine.

Stan Lee and Jack Kirby are assigned to make a superhero team
During the late 1950s, Atlas also had tiered competition with DC comics. In fact, DC comics was performing better than Atlas Comics at that time. The Justice League would be released by DC comics, gaining more popularity for the company.
[Photo Courtesy: Marvel Entertainment / YouTube ]
In response, the owner of Atlas Comics requested for Stan Lee to create a new superhero team to even out the competition. Stan Lee would collaborate with Jack Kirby on this new project to create a superhero team America had not seen before.

In 1961, the Fantastic Four were created
In 1961, Atlas Comics would rebrand the company to the name Marvel Comics and premiere the new superhero team in “Fantastic Four.” The first thing to stand out about these characters was their varying backgrounds.
[Photo Courtesy: Fantastic Four / Pixy.org]
The characters were older, younger, and married; filling different roles that made the characters appear more like a family. Fantastic Four characters were not perfect but faced moral and social issues as regular people who happen to have super abilities. Making the characters more relatable to the public created great success for Marvel Comics.

Fans get to know Stan Lee through “Stan's Soapbox”
In 1965, Marvel had a reader’s Bullpen Bulletins to keep dedicated fans updated. Stan Lee wrote a monthly column answering questions and talking about projects with fans. He also gave shout outs to other artists that worked on the stories.
[Photo Courtesy: Screen Rant / YouTube ]
The interaction helped develop a loyal bond between the two and became a place of familiarity for both Stan Lee and the fans. He called his column “Stan's Soapbox”, which he would write from December 1965 to January 1982.

The Hulk was gray before being green
In 1962, Bruce Banner would be introduced to America in “The Incredible Hulk.” This is another character Stan Lee and Jack Kirby created together, and not the last. The main character was a closer relation to the classic tale of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Louis Stevenson.
Originally, The Hulk was illustrated with gray skin. The first issue of the comic was said to have a gray color. Printers at Marvel Comic were not dependable for keeping a consistent gray color. In issue #2, the comic printed The Hulk with green skin.

The X-men and the Avengers are created in 1963
Stan Lee and Jack Kirby created two new superhero teams in 1963. One was the “X-men,” which showcased a group of human mutants supporting each other while being scrutinized by “normal” humans. The main characters were under the mentorship of Professor X and Magneto.
The other team was “The Avengers,” which was a combination of a superhero collective crossover between comics. Originally, the featured members included Iron Man, the Wasp, the Hulk, Thor, and Ant-Man.

Peter Parker was like most American teens trying to figure life out
One day Stan Lee got an idea for a superhero as he watched a spider climb up a doorpost. He would write a comic for a hero with spider-like abilities. Steve Ditko helped create Peter Parker, one of Stan Lee’s favorite characters.
Stan Lee wanted Peter Parker to be relatable to his adolescent audience. The triumphs and struggles of Peter Parker would be the same as most teens in America, besides using his powers for crime-fighting. Peter Parker first made an appearance in Amazing Fantasy #15 and would premiere alone in 1963.

Spider-Man inspires a change in policy for the Comics Code Authority (CCA)
In 1971, the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare sent a request to Stan Lee asking him to place an anti-drug message in one of his storylines. He thought of putting the message in Spider-Man where Peter’s best friend Harry would abuse pills after a bad break up.
[Photo Courtesy: spider man jump / pixy.org]
The Comics Code Authority (CCA) that regulated content felt this idea was not good to pursue. Stan Lee convinced Martin Goodman to publish the story. This story was received so well that the CCA threw away their code about the negative depiction of drugs, which allowed more comics to talk about meaningful topics.

Stan Lee mass produces creative works by using the Marvel Method
In the 60s, Stan Lee created comics relatively quickly, but it was a method used by the company that made this possible. Inside Marvel Comics they use a production system referred to as the Marvel Method. Stan Lee would give a loose outline to artists in the company, so they could all get to work.
[ Photo Courtesy: Marvel Entertainment / YouTube ]
Artists in the company would draw the loose outline, then Stan Lee went in to add captions to the story. Some people saw this way of using the artists for such regular production as exploration, but many times Stan Lee credited much of the behind-the-scenes teams on his comics.

Stan Lee tackles television with The Incredible Hulk TV show and an animated series for Spider-Man
During the 1970s, Stan Lee took a step back from comics to try other projects. He took characters, like The Hulk and Spider-Man, to the small screen. He arranged for The Incredible Hulk TV show and an animated series for Spider-Man.
It was around this time that Stan Lee began to work on possibly making X-men into a movie. The idea was scrapped for the time being. Surprisingly, that production of X-men had Danny DeVito cast as Wolverine.

The X-Men storyline touched on social issues inspired by the Civil Rights era
The comics and characters Stan Lee made often talked about real-life issues in society, like the Cold War. One of the most notable social issues touched on in Marvel Comics is the Civil Rights movement during the 1960s.
Stan Lee’s X-men was especially tied to themes of that era that still can be learning points in modern society. Many people would connect with the story of sympathy and pain. Later on, X-men would also be connected to depicting stories that touched on the LGBTQ community.

Professor X and Magneto are modeled after Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X
The storyline in X-men centered on a group of people being treated poorly for a part of their identity that cannot be chosen. Rather than color, the plot uses mutants and “normal” people. The two mentors Professor X and Magneto are a reflection of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X respectively.
[Photo Courtesy: Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. & Malcolm X / wikimediacommons.com ]
Professor X took a more peaceful approach to improve the relationship between “normal” people and mutants. Magneto took a more aggressive outlook on what to do to help mutants in society.

Stan Lee became the president of the company but decided to step down
There was a time where Stan Lee worked as the president of Marvel Studios. His new role came with responsibilities that were more technical and required a different skill set. The biggest problem was that the new role created too much distance between Stan Lee and the creation of the comics.
After some time as the president, Stan Lee stepped down to get back to the creative portion of the company. That is where he felt the most comfortable, and where he had the most interest.

November 20, 2014Jason Halstead1 comment
Yesterday the bundle, A Kiss of Christmas Magic, was listed on the NY Times bestseller list at spot #11. It pegged #31 on the USA Today bestseller list. For those that follow this blog, my newsletter, or website / Facebook page, you might remember the second longest story in that bundle is by Dawn Michelle. Dawn Michelle happens to be the name my wife and I write under (and it’s also her name, if you want to get technical). So, in a roundabout way, that means after five years of being a professional writer, I’m finally a NY Times bestselling author. Queue up the confetti, sirens, parade, and line of celebratory cocktails.
Then I checked my daily sales this morning. On the same day I sold 19 books and Dawn Michelle sold 4. How’s that for taking the wind out of my sails? Or sales…whichever spelling you prefer (see what I did there?)
I have to say that, hands down, the group of writers I worked with where fun, amazing, and professional. Well, a few times we might not have been professional, but it was in a fun and energizing sort of way. The point is, every one of them deserves it, and every one of them is a damn fine writer on their own merits.
What the process also told me is that being a great writer isn’t nearly enough. I always believed that if you write a good book, and write enough of them, the volume and quality of work will speak for itself. The readers and sales will come. Life will be good. After nearly writing 70 books and receiving a lot of outstanding reviews and praise, I’m here to say that enough isn’t enough.
To hit the list we needed the combined might of a whole lot of fan bases, first and foremost. Some of the authors have dedicated fans in numbers that left me staggering. I learned a LOT in the process, including the sheer masses of paranormal romance readers that are out there. I mean…wow! There’s a lot.
But that wasn’t enough, we needed more. That more came in the form of literally thousands of dollars spent in advertising. I can’t begin to grasp where all of it went, but there was a lot of ads out there getting the word out. That was a huge contributer. It bumped us up to our peak of #15 on the Amazon bestselling chart (all paid books).
So this is me being happy and also warning fledgling writers out there. Sure, there will always be exceptions to the rule that skyrocket to the top for no reason other than right time, right place, right luck. The over 99.9999% of us have to bust our asses. It’s a business and there’s no such thing as fair play. Write your asses off and understand it doesn’t end there. There’s a lot more to it than that. And if you’re like me without a budget for such extras, that means figuring it out and finding the time to do it yourself.
Good luck my friends – now that I’ve hit the NY Times list my plans are… write another book.

Snuggling Up With a Naughty Nook to Read
November 11, 2014Jason HalsteadLeave a comment
I was stricken by some inspiration last night to do some data mining. It happens every now and then, I’m a numbers and stats junkie. Hey, admitting I have a problem is the first step to overcoming it, right?
So anyhow, I focused on my 3rd quarter Smashwords results. I’ve been experimenting with Kindle Unlimited on Amazon and trying to figure out the best way to reach the most people. Sales have taken an epic leap into a giant brown and smelly sinkhole, so every person reached is bigger than ever.
What I found was very interesting, to say the least. Over the July – September period, I made roughly $800 on iTunes. Whether that’s good or bad is irrelevant for this discussion. Why? Because Dawn Michelle, my wife, made $80 on iTunes in the same period. My theory behind that is iTunes customers prefer science fiction and fantasy over paranormal romance.
The next significant sales figures came from Barnes and Noble. For Jason Halstead (that’s me, in case you’re just joining), I had $0 sales at B&N via Smashwords. Not surprising, almost all of my B&N titles go directly through B&N. They work out to approximately $10 – $30 a month in royalties. Nothing to get excited about. Dawn Michelle, on the other hand, rocked well over $400 on B&N sales for that 3 month period!
There’s really only one conclusion I can draw from this data – Nook readers like smut! Okay, maybe that’s too rough. They like romance. Paranormal romance. With some spice. In other words…furry porn. (sorry, I couldn’t resist).
So what does this mean for me? Well, I’ve moved some of my titles over to strictly being on Amazon and taking part in KDP Select / KU to allow borrowing. It’s saved my bacon so far this month too. I haven’t seen sales this low in 3 years and I don’t know what the hell is going on, but KU borrows are making up for the lackluster sales by averaging 5 – 10 borrows a day. My wife’s books, on the other hand, have done better by being available on multiple venues (especially those naughty nook owners – god bless you folks!), so we’re going to make sure her new series stays as available as possible.
Her new series? It’s paranormal romance again – and the beta readers are saying it’s even better than the Claimed by the Beast series. It picks up after her story in A Kiss of Christmas Magic ($.99 bundle of over 1200 pages written by 20 different authors – it’s available as of today). And it continues the original Claimed by the Beast series by telling Beth’s story after the fur settles. Oh, and this time, instead of shifters, the focus is vampires.
I know, I know, a vampire romance…sigh. But she’s made good on her promise that there will be no sparkling.
Crap, the new series is called Blood Kissed, and the first book (First Kiss) is available for pre-order. Book 2 is called Forever Kiss and is in the editing stages now.
As for me? Book 2 in my Serpent’s War series, I’m shooting to have it out sometime in the Christmas – early January time frame. Even though sales have been abysmal for book 1, it’s a great story and I have to write it. And, hopefully, more people will get into it as time passes.

Reviewing Reviews
November 5, 2014Jason HalsteadLeave a comment
For those in the reviewing, blogging, or writing business the name Kathleen Hale has achieved a special kind of infamy lately. This is not where I weigh in on her, her actions, or her antagonist. Yes, I read about the antics and I can say that, as a writer, there’s nothing more infuriating than a bad review without substance or justification. Some people are dicks, plain and simple, and get off on making other people miserable. Yet if nobody ever posted their thoughts when something failed to blow their skirt up, how would I find opinions on products I’m interested in buying?
Set the buying aside, how about producing? I write books, and without feedback I have only my editor and my personal opinion on how my finished product turns out. Every book is a learning experience in how to get better at what I do, from grammar to content to writing style. My editors, beta readers, and fans are invaluable to me. I love hearing what worked and what didn’t. And if that means reading about it in a review, then that’s what I’ll do. Even a bad review. As Rocky Balboa said, “It ain’t about how hard you can hit, it’s about how hard you can be hit and keep going.”
That’s life, my friends. And a minor jab I took yesterday was from a great blogger / reviewer by the name of Angus Day. He read Voidhawk, my first published novel. I cringe whenever somebody tells me they read it – that was written five or six years ago and I’ve improved so much since then! But people continue to love it. In fact, I had another email a few days ago from a man who read Voidhawk and stated that based on that book alone he would buy and read anything with my name on it. How cool is that?
But back to Angus. His review was positive. 3 out of 5 stars, and I believe he stated the middle of the road rating came from typos and grammatical problems in the book. Since he reached out to me directly in a message I was happy to talk to him about it and learn more about his concerns. That’s the kind of feedback that I strive for. Something to make me better. I address many of the issues raised and re-submitted Voidhawk to Amazon last night with the corrections. That’s the awesome thing about the age of the ebook – I can turn things around that fast.
So thank you, Angus, both for your kind words and for your critique. It was well deserved. As for my readers or potential readers, go try out Voidhawk, it’s free on Amazon and in spite of my cringing I will say that every time I revisit that first novel I’m caught up in just how entertaining it is. And it’s got six sequels, with a seventh burning away in the back of my head and waiting in line to be turned into a living thing.

The Serpent and The Girl
October 23, 2014Jason HalsteadLeave a comment
I was wracking my brain for a catchy blog title and decided to go with something that sounded rather biblical. And taboo / risqué / naughty. I admit, that’s how I roll. I’m one of those guys that often says the things that other people think but are afraid to talk about. I figure if I scare a few people off the voices in my head will still talk to me.
Enough rambling! What the heck am I talking about? Well it’s a new book. Servant of the Serpent, a new fantasy novel set in my world of Kroth. It happens to be book one of a new series I’m working on (Serpent’s War). I would have called it the Serpentwar series, but another far more renowned author than I (Raymond Feist) already has a series by that name. He wrote some darn fine books too, I have to admit.
But this isn’t about him, this is about something new and never-before-read! Servant of the Serpent takes place in the southern lands. More southern than even Shazamir, for long time readers. New lands are explored and new enemies are encountered. Of course the book ties in to old enemies (and friends) as well. There’s a connection and an overall sweeping plot behind the scenes here, after all.
Servant of the Serpent marks the eight book in the world of Kroth (nine, if you count the visit from the Voidhawk’s crew in Voidhawk: Broken Shards). There’s plenty more to come with new adventure, excitement, and the occasional maiden being eaten by a dragon.
Here’s the blurb, cover, and a link to get it on Amazon. It may be available elsewhere soon too, I’m evaluating my distribution channels and trying to pick what works the best.
Allie was meant for something more.
The world of Kroth is full of amazing people. Men and women that did miraculous deeds. Kings and queens and knights and wizards. Allie wanted to meet some of them. She wanted to learn what it was like to make a difference and to escape the hot and dusty life on the edge of the desert.
Yet dark forces are moving in the shadows and trying to reclaim what was lost. A secret prophecy guides them on their quest for blood and fire. The path of the scaled splisskin people cross with Allie’s, proving that the cost of her dreams might be more than she can bear.

Its lovely and all,but how come you always ask my Aunt Emily to do the guest interviews? The trouble is,she only can speak in such ways that understanding be had by all,and surely to goodness that cannot be what our Enquirer is all about, unless to my dismay,I am much mistooken?
Also,I am with the lefties just like in the magazine. In fact,I would give my right arm to be ambidextrous.

Lizzie and I were saying not 3 hours ago at Bethpage "The new Enquirer hasn't come out yet". And as if by magic, a Strange Magic, Voila! (Did you see what I did there?? Strange and Magic?? See it now? Very clever!)
Anyway, it's awesome Andy. The interview with Emily was particualrly, shall we say, charming. And the explanation of VEM - couldn't have put it more succinctly myself. No, honestly, I couldn't have done it myself.
Just one problem, someone's nicked page 7 from my copy. Come to think of it, pages 2 thru 6 aren't there either, or anything after page 7 if it existed. I bet it's those rotten Cheezo's again! Am I allowed to say that? Yes? No? Is it against T's & C's? Need some comfirmation on this one from Icon or Sky. Am I allowed to mention player's names if it has nothing to do with cheating or sand bagging or cheating or quitting or cheating or multi-accounting, or cheating? Come back to me on that one will ya.
Anyway, I would have said YJ would be up for the 4000 posts prize, but I see he's already up to 4500 save spitting distance, so I guess it must be someone else. I'd better go find a page 7 somewhere.
I'm off in search of SM to get meself some of what he's got! I'm guessing all I need is a boat that doesn't float.MioKontic

Well Mio, it's not so much a rotten boat. It's more like a 2X12X16 that doubles as a bridge that goes over this depression in the back yard that collects water. The good news is that it's only been there a couple of years and I guarantee that it will not take on any additional water. Once you have the coordinates from SM, you can study the ocean currents and plan a suitable place to launch. (Providing that you obtain permission from Lizzie first to ride on her ooocean).
Please consider it my gift to you towards your happiness. (But you have to pick it up).

Which neatly brings me to a post I didn't write, but could have nearly two weeks ago.
Whilst I am unable to specify exactly when, due to a certain indisposition involving the rescue of several puppies and the discovery of just who had been at my jam,I can with equanimity state that the actual time of the post I didn't but could have written,is more or less totally irrelevant. In fact, this very post is just an experiment to see if I can winkle out those among us who shall not be named(not because thats against forum rules, but because they are so insignificant that I can honestly say I don't remember their names-but they know who they are),who think that rambling posts that have nothing to do with their own assinine interests are a waste of their time.Rather begs the question then,as to why they would waste their time even reading them.or breathing.
However, let us not mire ourselves-we were talking hats, and I have a pink one.

Wierd but I just realised you might well have been referring to the pink balls and not my Wooly knix,so you are entirely excused nay exonerated Mio,and I personally am happy again that no one will be aware nor any the wiser about my indiscretionation re: the knix thing.
While I am writing,I ought to mention that luckily, for the last few days I seem to have been bug free where my personal message system is concerned and I am no longer falling victim to having our communications together being misdirected into the main forums. You were right in your assumption that having cleared my flashing cache,I had thus inadvertantly allowed the 'bots deployed by the wgt machine into my own system, and it was they who wreaked havoc both in my folders dealing with correspondence and my actual gameplay. This is borne out by my being unable to eagle BP # 4 as usual, and occasionally BP #15 just like you do.
I agree also that we should keep this between ourselves,ha ha,it just wouldn't do for the whole community to be aware,we have to maintain the illusion that we are just ordinary folk. I will continue to post desultory posts concerning VEM,ball life and innacurate yardages to help foster that illusion.
Oh,lastly,I must thank you for the "super" club you designed,I feel honoured that you allowed me to share in its secret testing.I think the ability to drive accurately up to 460yds without having to aim or ding is going to be quite useful when I fix my average and begin our takeover of the legend tier as we discussed.

Yes, I was referring to the pink balls, but now that you come to mention it I haven't seen you in those wolly knix (as you so affectionately call them), but as it's getting a bit warmer now I guess you don't need them. I already use pink callaways. They come with a special offer from Ike,who sold me a pair of rose tinted spectacles, works like a charm, and all for just £9.99.I look so cool in them too,so cool that at a recent nine inch nails gig,I could have sold them 50 times over.
This was the gig that started to turn a bit nasty after a roadie clubbed a skinhead with his torch, and upset all the other skinheads who wnated a go too.I resumed the peace by taking to the stage and giving my acapella version of "Come by yah" followed by making dampers and mars bars wrapped in orange skins baked in tinfoil over the fire started by some students who thought they were at a student loans demo. They weren't but their fire was just lovely, although event management seemed a bit peeved. You would think a set of stage curtains were made of gold or something the way they moaned.Resolved that one by letting Lambert have at them with his pogo stick,he looks quite the tyrant in torn jeans and braces, but I felt the safety pin through his right eyebrow was a step too far,and cook had the awfullest job sewing him back together afterwards.Cost us two bottles of "Anaesthetic" from somewhere called Glen Morange to keep Lambert still.
I got one drumstick and a broken plectrum for my collection, but think I might have left my wooly Knix behind, but then, someone had to do something for the triple A backstage pass.
In other news,I varnished one third of my accomodation boards for the yacht, but failed to allow adequate drying time and now the dog is partially hairless on account of him inadvertantly lying on drying board, and my having to liberate the board from his flesh. The good news is,now that he has ugly bald patches,I can earn even more cash in the subway.

Oopsie Lizzie, I think that message was meant to have gone to Icon. Now you've let the cat out the bag. So it is all true about pre-determined game results. There'll be one or two interested parties in this admission! What one will do to be a... well... a blankety blank!

Wierd but I just realised you might well have been referring to the pink balls and not my Wooly knix
Yes, I was referring to the pink balls, but now that you come to mention it I haven't seen you in those wolly knix (as you so affectionately call them), but as it's getting a bit warmer now I guess you don't need them. Bikini bottoms is (almost) the order of the day now, but not on the golf course obviously!
Back to balls, I'd have thunkered (I hope I've got my tense right there) you would have requested, nay insisted, that WGT make them there Callaways in anything other than white, namely pink... at a reduced price of course!LizzieRossetti

No, actually quite chic! It does take a bit of time to get used to the small pieces of duct tape fastening to one's nose. And you need to be aware they will blow off while chasing birds and whatnots.

YankeeJim,
Congrats on your 4,444 post!
I like the number 4.
I once hosted a tournament where you had to try turn in a card with all 4's. Meaning you had to bogey the par3's, birdie the par5's and par the 4's.
The 4-4-4-4-4-4-4-4-4 Ultimate Open I think it been called and such.

ICONIAN's TIPS
WGT FORUM THREAD How to properly use chip and pitch clubs: A guide V2.0W
iconian 599 Posts | Sun, Jan 3 2010 4:34 PM |
*This has been fairly popular. I finally have some free time to properly update it with more readable language and better formatting. A special thank you goes to drivnchaos for his help with the wording.*
I know many of you have trouble figuring exactly how the chip and pitch shots work. Since all clubs have different distances, when using the chip or pitch shot, this will be a general guide. If you use this as a guideline, and practice a bit, you should be able to improve your short game.
During the first section of this guide we'll be using the standard clubs, standard green speed and standard ball. Later on the different green speeds and balls will be covered. Due to green speed changes, at the end of this guide, I will update with the details on how to adjust it.
If you do not read the last paragraph if this guide, then you might as well close the window now!
I'll start with the chip shot:
The chip shot gives about 25% air travel, the rest is time spent rolling on the green. Chip shot is most important when a person in on a fringe and has a putt with major break and/or elevation change. It allows you to carry few yards in the air, bypass all the nasty elevation/break and then land on green and roll in the roll. This means an accurate read of the green is needed when using this. Since the air time is so short, the distance from the green is also a big factor. If you are more than 2yds off the green, do not use the chip shot. The pitch shot is the better option.
Most often the chip is played using a wedge, but can be played with any iron. Remember that the ball spends alot of time on the green when chipping so the right/left break must be read accurately. It is probably best not to go any higher than a 9 or 8 iron for this reason. ie:
You're trying to chip a 35yd shot. Your ball will land about 9 yrds away, and roll another 26 yds. That's a 78 ft roll where the break of the green will influence your shot.
The distance of each club is the distance when playing from the fairway, to a level target. If You are standing on the fairway, the hole is 17yds away, and the elevation is 0, your shot should go about 17yds. Since this is usually not the given lie, here are a few things to factor into your shot.
- 1) What is your lie in the rough and how far away is the green. Remember if you are more than 2yds from the green, don't use the chip.
- 2)What is the elevation difference.
- 3)What is the break of the green where your shot will first hit the green. The break may be slight near the hole, but remember that the ball rolls for 75% of the shot. Try dragging the aim arrow to where you think the ball will touchdown, and check the break there also.
- 4)Always practice using 1 type of chip. I always use backspin, very rarely using topspin or no spin, so all distances givin are using backspin.
With these things in mind, here are a couple of examples. For these I'll be using a 17yd chip shot
A) You have a 13yd chip from 40/50 rough and the hole is 1ft below you. Your ball is on the edge of the rough, so there should be no problem using the chip shot. Now since you're in the 40/50 rough, more power is needed, but the hole is downhill so there is more run involved. That's the tricky part.
In general the 40/50 rough requires 40% more power to get the distance you want. That means in order to go 13yds, A shot with 19yds of power is needed. Remember this is with 0 elevation change.
The hole being 1ft lower than the ball means that a full 17yd chip shot from the fairway, would run to about 20yds. This is where practice is needed.
Knowing that the ball will go 20yds due to the downslope, and knowing more power is needed to release the ball from the rough, you need to find the midpoint of the 2 shots. From experience I've found that hitting with 15yds of power, and full backspin, I can drop it within 3ft 8 out of 10 times. Remember that this is a shot with no left/right break.
B) This one you're on the fairway chipping to an uphill green with a break to the right. A good example of this is Bethpage hole #11.
You're about 19yds short and the hole is 2ft uphill. The green breaks hard left to right. Remember that hitting uphill will require more power, but since you're on the fairway, not alot more. Also, the break will add distance to the shot. 1yd per foot uphill, and since I'm aiming about 1yd to the left, I'll add an extra yd. Thats 3yds extra power, aiming to the left about a yard. Usually this gets me up close to the hole. The best thing here is practice.
The thing to think about with chipping is this. It is a recovery shot. You have missed the green with your first, second, or third shot, and now you just want to save par. Getting it close to the hole, for an easy putt, is the important part. Course management and effective use of the chip, will save you at least 1-2 shots per round. As you will be consistently getting close to the hole, the chips will start to fall in.
Now I'll move on to the pitch shot.
The pitch shot gives about 50% air travel before hitting the green. This means less time rolling, and less influence from the break.
The pitch shot works well when you're to far away to chip. This is most often on Bethpage where the rough stops the ball quickly. The use of the pitch shot is essential on Bethpage.
Here are a few rules to follow for the pitch shot:
- 1) From the fairway subtract 4 to 5 yards
- 2) From 30/40 rough add 0 yard
- 3) From 40/50 rough add 2 yards
- 4) from 10/20 sand subtract 1 yards
The same rules apply to pitching as they do on chipping when an uphill/downhill approach is encountered. Also take into account the right/left break of the green. As I said earlier, the break has less influence because the ball is not spending as much time on the green.
The pitch shot is very useful when you are short of the green on Bethpage #10. When I am in the rough or sand 22-28 yds out, I just follow the above rules, and I am within 5ft 90% of the time. There are some greens that have a large incline between the rough/sand and the hole. #5 and #6 on Bethpage are good examples of this. This is where being 2yds off your power can mean being stuck in the rough or being 10-12ft past the hole. The best advice I can give you is to keep notes on the trouble spots. That way when you are there again, and you will be lol, you can adust your shots for a better result.
As a final note on chipping and pitching. These 2 shots are probably the most consistent parts of this game. Being able to use them properly will easily shave 2-3 strokes off your game on Bethpage.
Just a few words on the punch option. I like to call this an advanced option
This shot works well on Bethpage to get yourself out a tough situation. The rough on that course is deep in most spots, and the punch shot can really save your round. I find that when punch is used, from the rough, the distance of the club travel is closer than that of a full shot. This also works when you are facing a headwind, from the fairway. A good example of this is Bethpage #1. A 188yd punch shot into a 9 headwind will go about 185yds. A 185yd full shot will only go about 177yds.
The punch has a few more fairway uses on Kiawah though. I regularly use it on holes #13, #15, and #16 for 2 reasons.
The first is those holes usually play a short by 3-4yds, and any kind of wind, along with deviations can cause havoc.
I once hit a perfect 128yd club with a 5 tailwind only to land at 115yds on Kiawah #16. By hitting the punch shot ther I can be sure it will get there.
The punch shot does take more practice, and a gentle touch, so I will not go into much more detail. You will have to try it out, first by getting yourself out of trouble, then by experimenting with it in different situations. There are some shots where punch will easily save you par where ANY other shots will result in a bogey or worse!
The flop shot:
This has changed the most of all 3 shots. The key as always is to know the speed and slope of the green. For example, If you're in the bunker on Bethpage # 4, you have about 18yds to the hole. My flop is 15yds, but if I hit it full power, with full backspin, I will always land within 3ft of the hole. This is because it lands on a downhill slope. Flop is hard to aim, generaly rule is about 6-8 ft left of the hole but because flop is 75% air 25% run, wind highly influences it.
On the same #4 BP if you are left of the flag with about 25 yards left from the fairway, 4 types of wind on a fast grene will result in 4 different aim options and 4 different power settings. With 10mph tail wind, hitting as 21yards of power is enough, with 10 head wind, hitting with 24 yards of power is good. With 10mph right wind, aiming 2-3ft closer to the flag will do the trick. Since winds are rarely straight tail or head, practice will be required to adjust properly aim and power of the shot accordinly
Flop will probably be the lesser of the 3 shots you will hole out, but in some situations, because of it's flying tragectory, it will be the difference between par and bogey while utilizing any other shots.
Now the clubs :
You need to practice with them to understand the carry and roll. With the basic set you could count on a certain distance in the air and on the ground. The chip was always 25% air 75% roll, and the pitch was always 50% air 50%roll. The new clubs all seem to have their own distances so trial and error is the way there. Some clubs have the 50/50 split while others have a 75/25 split. Practice, again, will be the best thing.
The thing to remember is since the green speeds have increased, your short game must become more percise. Where 3ft long before was good, now it has become 10ft. I still recommend taking notes as to how each hole plays from each distance. Your notes, in combination with these tips, will have you rattling the flagsticks !
Lastly, there are VERY FEW places, where in my opinion any of the 3 shots can be used interchangibly (excluding punch). General rule is, always use same shot from same spot (that is, if you gotten close before). By far THE MOST IMPORTANT point of this guide, is to keep notes. If you do not keep notes about what you hit from what spot, how hard, and how far it was aimed as well as the result of the shot executed, then you will simply forget the shot you executed and will be frazzled the next time you get there.
Update 1/04/10
With the introduction of new clubs, balls , and green speeds, I thought the guide needed updating to reflect the lastest changes. The basics in the guide are still the same, there are just a few adjustments that need to be made.
I'll address the new balls first.
What is important here is extra distance and extra spin. Overall I think they make little difference on the chip/pitch/flop shots, but when combined with the new clubs and green speeds there is a noticeable change. Practice is the tip here. You just need to learn the new distances while applying the basic tips in the sections above.
The biggest difference, for chipping and pitching, are the green speeds. Adding in the slope and break of the green can mean the difference of being close before, and being 10ft past now.
The chip shot:
The same principle applies here. Know the lie percentage, the elevation change, and the right/left break of the green. The key here is the greens are faster, therefore the run will be further.
Lets look at that 13yd chip shot mentioned above. In the 40/50 rough a 40% power increase is needed. With a standard green speed this means 19yds is needed to go 13yds, on a flat surface. Now with a fast green speed, a power reduction is needed. I'd say reduce the power by 1yd on a fast green, and more on a very fast green.
The pitch shot:
The same principle applies again, but there is something to be added in. You must know where you are in relation to the hole. The best example of this is Kiawah #2. If you are 20yds long it will show the hole being 1ft up, but in reality once you are on the green, the hole is downhill 1ft. This type of misread will ruin your round. With this shot being from the fairway at 20 yds, with a flat surface you would want to hit about a 16yd pitch shot. Now when you factor in the green speed with a 1ft downhill green you're looking at a 14yd shot.
Another example would be the 40/50 rough pitch shot. Before it would have been a 27yd shot, now with faster greens and a downhill slope, you have a 25yd shot or less.

- Well, it's over! It has been my honour and pleasure to organise and host this event.
I think the discussion thread led us to a very successful format which despite a few hiccups, was fairly easy to run...
But only because I had a lot of people helping along the way. So from me, a huge personal thank you to these guys -
WigerToods, C.Everett, ScottHope, Bery111, Twominusone.
I'm sure I've missed a few names that helped me a lot (sorry, old stoner brain!) and some other people helped by posting on my wall and messaging me to keep me on track, all of you have my sincere thanks.
- FULL BRACKETS BELOW
Sounds like we got the final that this tournament deserved, great play from both guys. Dave (onekeano) has been outstanding, joint winner (with Adeypa) of the strokeplay event and then making the MP final only to lose on extra holes. Huge congratulions to him.
Getting to the final and then beating Dave shows how good a player Jure (mkrizan86) really is. Very, very well played Jure. For the next year you are officially the man!

Paul,
Thank you so much for all of the time and effort you put in to make this event happen. It was incredible. I've put together similar events on WGT and I know how much of a toll it can take on your personal life and I applaud your effort.
Through your efforts I was able to make not only a new virtual friend but a new friend IRL with Mystry78, who I had the pleasure of playing with. As stated in another thread, he doesn't live that far from me and I hope come next Spring we'll be able to play some real golf with each other. That would never have happened without you putting this event together, so I thank you for that.
To those who helped Paul pull this off...I thank you as well.

Edit- Congrats to Jure, well played.

Awesome job to everyone involved in putting these tribute tournaments together.
Through all your hard work and efforts, this turned into something special which is apt for such a tremendous contributor to the community.
A special thanks to all the players and community for getting behind this, I made new friends, reacquainted with old ones.......and we reminisced about the great times Dennis bestowed upon us.
I certainly felt proud to be a member of this community once again, and that is what makes it such a good place - the people who actually make this game great.
It took a community effort to honour Dennis and everyone should feel proud. I am sure Dennis looked down and was humbled.
Congratulations to all the official winners, but in my book, every player who participated is a winner.
Three cheers for everyone!

Well done to everyone involved! Fantastically run, fantastically played and a fantastic memory for Dennis! I agree totally with what Alanti has said above.
As Paul eluded above...it's not over until the fat guy in the pink tutu sings (and I'm not sure if that's a good idea lol)....
So, over to Jure (mkrizan86) and BigKnight for the Final Final. This one's for fun, for you two guys to enjoy a final sand slinging contest in a search of extra-terrestrial life on St Andrews. Dennis has sent me a small request from t'other side as to the conditions:
18 hole Matchplay at St Andrews (setup as a practice match or go off your own tees if you're brave enough)
Front tees
Champ greens
Starter irons, 3wd, hybrid, wedges, putter and balls. You may use your own equipped driver.
Play as and when you are both able to arrange the match - we'll look forward to a match report here and a stream/recording of the match if either of you are able to.
Once again, thanks to all those that made this Memorial something special. Now we can look forward to next year's Andyson Memorial event.BigKnight

I saw this the day you posted it. I'm still clenched over the prospect of using the starter putter, but it should be fun ;-) Already sent my time table to BK (congrats on the win), we should get together soon enough. A huge thank you again to you, Paul and everyone else who helped in creating and running this fantastic event.

This may or may not help "confuse" your opponent:
Not sure how long the putter will take to dry after a spray, so use at your discretion! :Dbery111

The Final of all Finals is over. Twas a great time had by Jure and I as we toasted one last time to a great friend and WGT player...conditions were so much fun....starter balls on champ greens with a starter putter? lol.....
We traded the lead on the front at ST A. and came to the turn AS...Jure did a much better job than I of figuring out the putter, and was solid on the back nine. He won 4up.
Was a pleasure to make another new friend, and I enjoyed our chat along the way.
Cheers!

Let me start by saying another thank you to all who organised this event as a tribute to our dear friend Dennis, who brought both wisdom and joy to this place. I've had the pleasure of meeting a lot of great new people and will hopefully have the pleasure of playing with them again in the future.
As far as the match, Geof was a wonderful playing companion. We both had to adjust to the different sticks, in my case, especially the putter. Tough for us off dingers to guess the correct spot on the meter, let alone clicking it in time ;-) But after a couple of holes, it was as if muscle memory from Corwyn's UEL starter comps and Ryder cups kicked in and started holing most putts within 15 feet. Lucky night for me, a little less fortunate for Geof. He started well and got 1 up on the 3rd hole, but then burnt the cup edge too many times. I won #5 (25 footer for eagle) and #6, we split the next 2 and were tied after 9, which he birdied and I didn't. But then came the back 9, where I won the 1st 4 holes, we tied #14 and #15 and the match was over with a score of 4&3.
We managed to find some rough, enjoyed the fescue on #13 and all in all had a fun outing. It was a privilege and a treat to have the opportunity of playing along one of the greats of this game, both in golfing and in human terms.

Fantastic work from Paul and his hard working colleagues.
Well done winners and runners ups.
Well done to all who played and all who contributed to the various threads.
WGT should be proud that members of their game have came together like this, in what is a world wide online bit of fun. Not many here know each other in "real life" but have came together to honour a man who sadly passed away.
Will any other online community pull together in that way.....I presume not.
For once and for all WGT either comment or contact Paul by pm......it would ease some ill feeling, of that I promise.

Well done Jure and Geof! Looks like you had a fun time with the starters! Thanks to everyone who came together for the Andyson Memorial. I leave you now with my saying for 2016: "If they won't, WE WILL" - I think it's self explanatory who the they are.

And this my Friends is what and why we have each other . The community of WGT land .
The game might glitch and some will Btch but others will look for fun , Andyson was one of few that enjoyed the other side of this game .
It was a pleasure to see how this Family stood up together for what was right .
Dear Santa ,
I ask for not my self of this season of joy . But that we all reflect on all the good things that this game put a smile on your face .

PaulTon,
Just a quick, belated update...as stated previously, the player I got teamed up with in the matchplay section of your tournament doesn't live too far from me and I finally got to meet my nemesis, who so solidly handed me my hat in your Andyson Memorial Tournament, in real life.
It is still a little too cold to play outside here in New England, but we managed to play a round at an indoor golf simulator facility two days ago and we had a blast.
Thanks to you Paul, I now have a new indoor, outdoor and virtual golfing partner.
Thanks!

It was an absolute pleasure and a blast to meet Mr Caddie and Eingmund and play some sim golf. And this time I had my hat handed to me by both of them:)
I look forward to playing some real golf with these fine gentlemen this spring when the weather warms up around here.
Thanks again to Paul Ton for organizing this great event for our friend Andyson.

SOME INTERESTING CHATS WITH A VERY COOL MEMBER "ACETATE"

Hey Paul, do we have a list of email addresses for our members?
BTW, how are you?
pdb1 wrote

I am fine . Did you receive a Newsletter ?
Emails of course everyone submits an email when they register in WGT . As they use each function it enables notifications for each function in their emails . You know this already . So as I request registration in the website . It also requires an email . So yes I have an email address for every member of the CC and then some . Of course there are many members from other CC's in the website and some members not in a CC at all .
But of course as admin I am entrusted to not release any personal information . So of course I would not do that .
But prior to my acquiring the website . Being a CC owner I received emails from many members and PM's from friends . I think I mentioned to you that at one point I had over 1000 friends on my list . So I tried to do group emails from my gmail . But with so many emails and so many ex CC members , and then just WGT friends that had no reason to receive my emails . The list was in the hundreds and impossible to keep up to date . So that method did not work .
Lol at that time . WGT's " message all members " was only available to owners . It did not work then . Then earlier this year WGT enabled more functions in CC's which included a feature for members to message all members . Lol . That did not work either . As far as I know . Have you tried it ?
As I have indicated previously you are likely to join my admin here at some point . Why do you ask about the emails ? I can help with that . How many do you want to send ? To all CC members I suppose . Let me know what you have on you mind .

Come on Ace . You can't play dumb with me . You know fcking well that those lists just aren't lying around somewhere . Lol . Just talk to me bro . I gotta trust you first . And then you will have access to all media functions .

Real quickly here . I am sure you have all the fancy spread sheets and what not available to you for making your tournament and it's roster .
I use primitive methods for all mine , like Maxthon's Skynote , then copy and paste , or blank forms in photobucket . Writing , making , and editing in the website is another way . I could make a forum for your new tournament . You and , then them could just click on it and all the topics would be there as you created them . I will do that right now . Then I gotta make this weeks BLITZ scorecard .

You are probably going to slap me for this but here I go.
I'm trying to find a way to notify all of our members of my alternate shot tournament. Since many don't read the forum and my tournament doesn't show in the country club tournaments under the WGT game client there is roughly, what would you guess, 50+ percent of our CC that doesn't know it exists.
This is where you slap me, saying that it is too f#cking bad for them. I agree.
Still I want these tournaments to go. I know that I could PM each and every one of them individually. I was trying not to spend half my day doing so.
All that said I understand the privacy issue. I would be happy if the WGT contact members function worked or if we had a distribution list where members could email to the list without knowing the individual email address for every one.
I could setup a distribution list if you then wanted to load it with the emails, or is there already a similar feature on the VOTSCC website?

Okay . I am used to people doing everything else but what I suggest . I was even going to gogle some other bracket generators for you . Who woulda thunk you were actually thinking of doing something I suggested like Challonge . Not I in a million years . Ok good deal then you are already well on your way .
You never did answer me . Did you receive the newsletter ?
"Thanks for setting up the thread out on VOTSCC."
Your welcome . You aint seen nothin yet .
Anyway I am hoping you received the newsletter . A feature in the website that allows group emailing . In specific groups . With delayed option that can be set for anytime in the future . Probably only good for New Years and birthday's . But there already is a birthday notification option that I could set to send a birthday greeting to a member . But no one enters their birthday . So that is useless .
I have already told you that i am not at all schooled in anything forum html , bbc , css , java script , wysiwyg , editing , etc . And what it makes worse is the forum makers are from the UK and their terminologies throw me off . Even if I knew the exact English description . That would only help me know what they were talking about . But I still wouldn't know how to utilize it .
acetate wrote

Yes at least once a week . Sometimes more . For most of 2015 .

Yes and I use the newsletter as a conduit to push the forum on the members . In fact most of them are just titled Quick links / date / little or no commentary , just links to the forum . I am consistent . I know they don't care about a newsletter update . I just have tried everything and even this quick link I think has little results . I cannot explain how frustrating it is to know that so much of what I suggest is so easy and only takes a couple minutes . I still get not even minimal . I get that they have jobs and family . I do too . I spend way too much time here . But I don't want that from them .
See this .I think this is his first maybe second post ever .

alternate shot tournament pairing
Between acetate, pdb1acetate wrote

Any suggestions on how I should go about pairing?
pdb1 wrote
on 10 Nov 2015 at 11:47 AM
Yes . While I have 6 more minutes of lunch . It is very easy . Depending on the range of your tiers . Basically lower with lower middle with middle , upper with upper . Here is a helpful guide for making tourneys and match ups . Remember the higher green speed per matchup trumps . So try not to make it so it increases more than 1 green speed . I think this is the fairest method .
Hardest: Legends and TLs
Hard: Masters and TMs
Medium: Pros and TPs
Easy: Hacks and Amateurs.
The standard green speeds:
TLs: Championship 13
Legends: Tourney 12
TMs: Tourney 11
TPs and Masters: very fast 10
Pros: Fast 9
Amateurs: Standard 8
Hacks: Slow 7
pdb1 wrote
on 10 Nov 2015 at 11:52 AM
There is now a faster champion speed I think but that is not up there . Legends , Tour Legends , and champions have to grouped together . Tour master is the toughest one to figure . If there are masters to match them with then that will work . If not then more likely better to go up then to legend .
acetate wrote
on 10 Nov 2015 at 2:21 PM
If I'm understanding you as long as only the two players that are a pair in this tournament are playing a game, then the green speed of the higher level player will be used.
For example if we were paired, then we would be playing with a green speed ofTourney 12, as you are a Legend while I am a lowly Pro.
On the other hand if I were paired with Harry we would be playing at Very Fast 10, as Harry is a Tour Pro while I am still that lowly Pro.
acetate wrote
on 10 Nov 2015 at 2:21 PM
If I'm correct so far, then I would pair as follows:
Harry & Ace
Racinray76 & Jimq916
the eight Legends and Dan, the single Tour Legend would be matched via a draw
Kmamjmemedmmm & Skip380
acetate wrote
on 10 Nov 2015 at 2:22 PM
Or do I just shuffle everyone and play the tournament at Champion 13 green speed?
pdb1 wrote
on 10 Nov 2015 at 3:14 PM
Picking the pairing is the way to do it . You have the right idea . Basically matching teams and opponents woek almost the same if possible . DO NOT EVER pick faster green speeds if you have a choice . Which you do not . No one even the Legends , Tour Legends , And Champions LIKE their faster default championship green speeds . But they have no choice . And as the tournament creator unfortunately you do not either . I repeat ( It'll take you a while )( as I already wrote you all this in another thread ) in any match play or stroke play normal ranked or scored round the default green speed of the highest tier is AUTOMATICALLY chosen .
Unless you choose to play the tournament in practice mode where the green speeds can be chosen by the person who sets the match . This is acommon format for these types of matches that bare played through Challonge . As the scoring method is determined by you which means a practice round match that does not count in WGT . Will count in a Challonge match with the scoring determined by you .
I don't know if you follow all that . Read it carefully . I will help in all ways . But I would prefer not to type and type and type .
pdb1 wrote
on 10 Nov 2015 at 3:16 PM
the highest level out of the 4 players will automatically be chosen .
pdb1 wrote

Are you filling a bracket in challonge ? If so unless you have studied some of mine and figured out what and how I made up alt shot brackets . It is very difficult to do As you have to change the username of the registered challonge members to something else because the bracket maker will not allow you to put two registered usernames on the same line .
Omg Ace I can't imagine what you are feeling and thinking right now . I know what I went through . And I really would never wish that on any one else that I liked anyway . But it can be done . I will help you .
pdb1 wrote

You have admin rights. I setup an 8 count bracket, figuring 2 players for each slot.
We will use practice mode, per your recommendation. What do you think about:
- Very fast 10 green speed.
- Medium wind.
- Default tee and hole location.

- flavel - tour legend - 101 - 61.54
- dan - tour legend - 94 - 61.86

- xdout - legend - 102 - 61.56
- pdb1 - legend - 98 - 63.19
- sage013 - legend - 98 - 63.29
- nitamgoht - legend - 99 - 63.93
- bertasion - legend - 87 - 64.74
- bill - legend - 92 - 64.66
- gene - legend - 92 - 65.34
- racinray75 - tour master - 93 - 67.80
- jimq916 - tour master - 97 - 79.68
- harry - tour pro - 93 - 69.44

Each two will be a pair, starting from #1 & #2 down to #15 & #16.
If this looks good to you I will plug them into the brackets.

MY tournament is going to played through challonge . If you are not already please register in challonge with your WGT username . I will be posting the sign in link on my next post after everyone is registered .
The brackets will be live on page 3 in our website . Some of you know the routine . For some of you and myself , this will be our first attempt at this . So all of your help and cooperation will be needed and appreciated .
Thank God we have Paul to help us do this and have fun . And hope the next thing you hear won't be crickets . Lol .

After all the teams are set, you MAY receive an e-mail stating that you have been removed from the tournament (IGNORE THIS).
DO NOT SIGN UP AGAIN! Challonge requires combining (2) players into one slot and assigning scoring rights to the first player listed.
YOU HAVE NOT BEEN REMOVED, BUT HAVE BEEN LISTED AS A TEAM!!!
There are other various reasons to shuffle and move players around . Each time this happens an automated email from Challonge is generated stating that you have been removed from the tournament . Again IGNORE THIS !
Inevitably no matter how many times I post this notice . Several players Message me and say WTF Paul FCK YOU and your tournament . Remove me you a** hole . Go fck the donkey you rode in on .
It happens everytime . Lol.
pdb1 wrote

You might post that whole thing . I would . They will know I wrote it . I will try to get to the bracket tonight . I am very tired also . If not I will do it tomorrow . I got layed off today . And will have a little time . Lol .
acetate wrote

I went without having them signup for Challonge. I figured that it would be difficult enough scheduling a time for their game and dealing with the configuration of a practice alternate shot game.
If I crash and burn I just hope that this will not turn everyone off to trying formats of tournaments other than what WGT restricts us to offer.
pdb1 wrote

they have no idea what you are talking about . They have never heard of something like this before . I have tried every way there is to play these tournaments . You can't cut corners . All participants must literally be on the same page . there is no other way . At the very minimal the 4 in each bracket . But that won't work . What is the pre tournament check in time ? what is the tournament start time ? these have to be established this cannot work in an informal setting .

As for Challonge.com nobody ever needs to register. You can use it strictly as a tournament tracking system. The person that creates the tournament can enter scores, move the tournament along and it will display results just as it would if everyone signed in and appeared at a given time.
All of what you just posted negates that option. When I commented that Paul may come through before me to show how to configure the alternate shot game for practice mode, I meant just that. How you can switch settings at the 1st tee.

No no no . Ace please . This is not a big deal . You made a hell of an effort . You are all good I promise you . Everyone will respect your efforts . I will see to that . nothing has changed . All good . I promise man . Nice try though . It is them that are complacent and unwilling to put it out . =You have shown great determination . This task is almost un do able . Maybe impossible . Whichever way you want me to go, I did enjoy being in your club and working with you.
I had no intent to give your club a black eye. I know how much you struggle to keep things running.
I learned a lot from you. Thank you for that. You have shown me more kindness in this month than everyone else together over this past year.
Just let me know how you want me to exit. I really am okay if you need to toss me. Just as I am if you would prefer I resign. Either way I would like to post a proper goodbye to the members before I am removed from its ranks.

They better not think that . I will tell them to go jump in the lake . Lol .

Now we can look forward to next year's Andyson Memorial event.

I saw this the day you posted it.

RIP Dennis

First off Martin, Happy Birthday...I'd love to take you out for a Tennents but not sure I can paddle that far over to you. Another great bulletin!!!!! Congratulations to everyone for their shots, achievements and rounds....and thanks for the recognition of my lucky ones. Great song yet again also...U2 is in my top 10 and are talented as all heck...Bono rocks.
Ok, first off, "Maybe Aye" to another pin placement on #15 of Merion. That hole, as hard as it plays, is one of my favorites. There are a few holes on WGT that you're happy walking away with a par, and that is absolutely one of them. A different pin would be great though.
Question 1 - taking a guess, but I say a player isn't entitled to see his ball while playing a stroke, but I'm kinda sure it would help a lot. Questions 2 I had no idea....I looked the Ryder Cup history up so now know that answer. Queston 3....the golfer who wore no glove....is my all time favorite, Freddie (I've walked around many, many rounds watching him in Florida).
Also, thanks for another tournament named after me....truly honored. Maybe in this one I can do better than 12th (lol)....probably not.
Keep up the great work Martin...these things are great....JimMca19670

Thanks, Martin, for another excellent effort. I look forward to the beginning of the week and a new weekly bulletin. I can't imagine a week without our buddy, Hamish McTavish.
If you want to change the location of the pin on 15 at Merion, stop choosing hard pin locations. No one will complain, I assure you. Maybe Aye.
The par 3 challenge:
A rules official would say not necessarily. It's like situational ethics, it depends. Thanks to the golf gods, we can make the rules as we go along, sometimes.
The Ryder Cup, in its current arrangement of US golfers playing their European counterparts, began in the late 70's. Jimmy Carter was the President. Mr. Ryder, who supplied the trophy, envisioned a completion between the US and Great Britain. I believe that was during the third decade of the 20th century. It's become a must see event. The players play their hearts out even though they don't get paid. We can all relate, I think.
It's already been revealed: Who is Fred Couples? Freddie has become a perennial Masters favorite. He competes strongly every year through 54 holes before fading. Lucky for us, as a former Masters Champion, he has a lifetime exemption.
See you next week. Good Luck.

Cheers Textor although I will bring up the Ryder Cup question. Maybe I should have worded it better but the answer I was looking for was 1927. The very first year it started. As for Merion I wish I could change It but waiting for WGT to give us some better places to put the pin on that green. See u all Monday.

Just played the 15th at Merion again there and it's the first time I've ever played it with the pin in a different position. Don't know if this is new or just that I've never seen it before. Anyway walked off with a par so liking the new position.

No I think that's the one I was originally talking about Paul. If I putted from where that pic is showing and slightly over hit the putt, I would end up off the green. You are then left with a 12 yard pitch back up which I'm now an expert at. LolDufferJohn7

Martin,
Sorry for the late response, I have no idea why. Always an enjoyable read and much appreciated post I look forward to reading each week.
On last week's poll, maybes naw. I'm too spoiled by my expensive Nikes to go back to the rock. The quick meter alone would put be out of bounds right, not to mention the inability to stop the ball. Good thing my tablet plays lots of vids for credits.
This week's poll, maybes aye as I like to see different pin positions for all courses but maybes naw as I find Merion 15 a challenge and have half a chance when I get the ball in the fairway in the middle of the landing area. Besides I'm sort of weird in that I like Merion. Early on I got totally wiped out there and was told it was a course to avoid. That appealed to my stubbornness and I made myself play it until I got it. I'm doing that now on Olympic and I finally got that bast*rd the other day in the VT second round but it got me back in the Free Multi round. GRRR
Looking forward to today's edition, have fun and hit 'em straight,
John

Well, it's over!

Three cheers for everyone!bery111

For once and for all WGT either comment or contact Paul by pm......it would ease some ill feeling, of that I promise.

Well done Jure and Geof! Looks like you had a fun time with the starters! Thanks to everyone who came together for the Andyson Memorial. I leave you now with my saying for 2016: "If they won't, WE WILL" - I think it's self explanatory who the they are.

Paul,
I must say that for people who were often at odds, you have put together a truly fine tribute to our departed friend. Thank you for this.

Thanks!
From L-R...mystry78, eingmund & mrcaddie

Wow . Wayne . How cool is that ?
Yes a GR8 example of the goodwill and humanity and an endless list of positive ramifications and future good things .
That has and will result from PaulTon's efforts from his magnificent Memorial Annual Event .
Right On , Cheers and Kudo's .
I'm still playing with friends I made during that event . Some new . Some long overdue .PaulTon

Getting to the final and then beating Dave shows how good a player Jure (mkrizan86) really is. Very, very well played Jure. For the next year you are officially the man!- THE HINGE AND BRACKET FINAL, FINAL
