Some of the most unique buildings that have been constructed have been libraries and no wonder why there is such a large amount of people that love visiting these places.
There are hundreds of libraries around the world that have either lasted a long time or have just been created to help the world retain more knowledge. The library of Alexandria was the start of keeping the texts of the world safe and ever since its destruction, there has been a movement to keep the books and texts of the world safe.
If we were ever to lose the knowledge that we have today then we would never know what happened in our past and not learn from our mistakes. If you love libraries, then you should check out these unique libraries that are located all over the world.
Macquarie University Library
First on the list is the Macquarie University Library which is located in Sydney, Australia, and is the largest academic library in the city. The unique-looking building started being constructed in 1967 and has gone through a series of renovations through the years. There are around 2 million books and other digital files that are stored in this prestigious library and the inside is just as impressive as the outside.

The Macquarie University Library is one of the best libraries to get to study if you are a student in the Sydney region not only because it has a unique look but the quality of books and documents here will have you coming back for more.
Cottbus Technical University Library
This amazing-looking glass castle is actually the Cottbus Technical University Library which is located in Brandenburg, Germany. The library was designed and proposed by two famous Swiss architects named Herzog & de Meuron during the early 90s, it took a while for the project to start but in 2001 construction began. The building was complete in 2004 and has been a centerpiece for Cottbus Technical University.

The interior of the library is just as marvelous and different as the outside was supposed to feel and look. There is a large spiral staircase that will lead you to the 7 floors that are within the glass castle. The color and the staircase are magenta and green color which gives this library a unique look.
Phillips Exeter Academy Library
The Phillips Exeter Academy Library is located in Exeter, New Hampshire, and is on the grounds of a private school by the name of Phillip Exeter Academy. Surprisingly this library is the second largest in the world which is a great achievement for a private school. There are around 160,000 books that are available here with room to add another 100,000. This nine-story building was designed by Louis Kahn and completed in 1971 when the library was opened.

The library is very distinctive looking, the center of the building catches everyone's eye and even received a Twenty-five Year Award from the American Institute of Architects.
Kanazawa Umimirai Library
The Kanazawa Umimirai Library is one of Japan's most beautiful libraries that they have created in recent years. It is a public library that is located in Kanazawa, Japan, and was designed and built by two architects, Kazumi Kudo and Hiroshi Horiba. The library was completed in 2011 and has been a favorite among the local people to visit.

What makes this library unique is the almost 6,000 small triangular windows that allow light to pierce through the windows which gives an amazing effect on the library below. The Japan Institute of Architects even rewarded the library with a prize in 2013.
The Morgan Library
The Morgan Library is one of the most gorgeous libraries located in the United States and is one of Manhatten City's treasures. The library was originally owned by the rich banker John Pierpont Morgan, he had such a large book collection that he decided to build this library.

The library was completed in 1910 and houses thousands of books and manuscripts from all over the world including the Morgan Bible and Codex Glazier. Besides just books, there is a large collection of art that was collected by JP Morgan over the course of his life.
Seattle Central Library
The Seattle Central Library is an architectural achievement that astonishes anyone that takes a look at either the inside or outside of the library. The public library was built in 2004 and cost the city of Seattle around $165 million to construct. This library sticks out among the other buildings located in downtown Seattle as the design is something unique.

The library was designed by two Dutch architects, Rem Koolhaas and Joshua Prince-Ramus, who wanted to design a building that stood out and served as a piece of art. Ever since its opening, the citizens of Seattle have been enjoying what it has to offer.
Labrouste Reading Room
The Labrouste Reading Room is an exquisite library that has been around for quite some time and is located in the beautiful city of Paris, France. The library was built in 1875 and designed by Pierre-François-Henri Labrouste who was a famous architect at the time.

The library has a remarkable look and is still used today and hasn't changed much in its appearance. In recent years there have been some renovations to keep the building intact and to restore the beauty that it is. This is a fascinating place to study and look at the amazing architecture.
Library of Trinity
The Library of Trinity is part of the prestigious schools of Trinity College and the University of Dublin. The library was built back in 1592 and holds all of the most valued Irish documents and books. There are around 7 million volumes of text located inside these walls and there is room for a lot more.

The library was the first in Ireland to be granted legal deposits privileges in 1801 which means that anyone who publishes a book in Ireland must deposit a copy for the library to keep records. They don't charge you anything to do so, which is why the library has a vast majority of books.
St. Florian Monastery Library
Located in the small town of Sankt Florian, this Austrian monastery has one of the most elaborate libraries that has been around for hundreds of years. When you enter the St. Florian Monastery Library you get transported back into time and taken back to the medieval era. This library was constructed in 1071, the builders wanted to have a Baroque look to the library.

The monastery was built for the memory of Saint Florian and is one of the most well-preserved libraries of medieval times. The rest of the monastery is just as grand and beautiful as the library is one of Austria's little gems.
British Museum
The British Museum Reading Room is something that you would see out of a movie and it contains a number of books about almost everything that the British Empire encountered. The Reading Room was constructed in 1857 in the city of London and was used for a number of years until it was closed for renovation in 1997.

It was reopened in 2017 and has been restored to its original state, the thing that catches people's eye about this library is the large circular room that makes you feel so small compared to all the books.
The National Library of China
The National Library of China is located in the capital of Beijing and is the world's largest library that has been constructed in Asia. This impressive library has around 41 million books and documents that are stored inside and has the most considerable amount of Chinese literature that you won't find anywhere else.

The massive library was first constructed in the early 1900s but has seen many renovations over the years and has become a major place of learning in China. This was the first library in China that took on a Western-style library that the country had never seen before.
National Library of Belarus
This futuristic building is home to the National Library of Belarus and is probably the most unusual-looking library that has been constructed. The site of the library has been around since 1922 but in 2002, the Belarusian government decided to construct a building that was different but still had a Soviet-style look.

The massive building is located in the capital of Minsk and is just as lavish inside. There are a number of Russian and Belarusian documents and books that have been collected over the years which equates to an estimated amount of 10 million items.
Royal Danish Library
The Royal Danish Library is quite an impressive piece of architecture that really makes you feel like you are in an important place of study. The library is part of the University of Copenhagen and is a public library as well. There has been a library in this location since 1648 but in 1999 Danish officials decided they wanted a new building that was a work of art.

The Royal Danish Library holds some of the country's most valuable texts and even is home to many artifacts that have been collected all around the world.
Vatican Library
The Vatican Library has been around since 1475 and is home to millions of texts that they have been collecting since the beginning. Located in Vatican City, the library has some of the world's most beautiful paintings and artifacts. Almost every part of the library is covered with all types of religious art.

The library is used for academic purposes only and visitors must have the correct qualifications and must be studying something to be let in. The Vatican realized that many people wanted to view certain documents within the library but didn't have the credentials, so they started digitizing most of the documents that they have stored.
Tama Art University Library
The Tama Art University Library is located in Tokyo, Japan and features some modern architecture that has been praised by many. The library is part of the Tama Art University which is why it has such a different look about its architecture. The library was constructed in 2007 and took around three years for it to be fully constructed.

The designer Toyo Ito wanted to create a library that would make people think of the word art and he wanted to make this building much bigger than the previous one. The old building could fit around 38,000 people and with this new structure, the library can now fit around 86,000 people which is impressive.
Peckham Library
The Peckham Library is a striking-looking building that is located in Peckham, United Kingdom. The library was designed by Alsop and Stormer, it was built in 2000 and amazingly the two won the Stirling Prize for the remarkable achievement. The people of London had never seen such a building be constructed in their area and praised the two architects on their creation.

The first year that it was opened there were around 500,000 visitors since the amount of publicity around it was enormous but it has slowly come down to around 400,000 visitors.
Tianjin Binhai New Area Library
Tianjin Binhai New Area Library is one of China's libraries that is located in the city of Tianjin. This library has a very artistic take on the structure of the building and is one of the most pictured libraries in the world. It was constructed in 2017 and holds over 1.2 million books but unfortunately, a majority of the books you see on the shelves are fake.

There are five levels to this gigantic building which has a total square footage of 33,700. This is the main attraction that many people visit each day when they are in the city of Tianjin.
Gothic Library
This quaint-looking library belonged to the Emperor of Russia Nicholas II and is named the Gothic Library of Emperor Nicholas II. Amazingly everything in this library is just the same as it would have been with the Emperor inside of it. The library was constructed in 1895 by the famous Russian architect Alexander Krasovsky.

Krasovsky wanted the library to have an old English feel to it and that is why he went with the Gothic Style. There are many texts located here that have dated back to medieval times and are a treasure trove of Russian history. This is an amazing library to visit if you ever find yourself in St. Petersburg.
Bibliothèque Historique de la Ville de Paris
The Bibliothèque Historique de la Ville de Paris which is also known as BHVP is one of France's public libraries that has been around for many of years. Located in the busy city of Paris, this library was built in 1969 as the original building was burnt down.

There is a large amount of literature located here including some documents that date back to the 16th century. The library has a collection of over 1 million books and over 20,000 manuscripts. The classic look of the library is simple but still has a charm to it.
Thomas Fisher Rare Book Library
The Thomas Fisher Rare Book Library is located in Toronto, Canada, and is home to some of the world's rarest books. The library was first opened in 1973 as the Department of Rare Books and Special Collections started accumulating a massive amount of books and needed a safe place to store them.

The library was named after the successful merchant of the past, Thomas Fisher, and contains around 750,000 pieces of literature that have been collected since the late 1800s. The library is public and is a great place to see the history of Canada and what they have collected.
Shaoyang Bookstore
Although this is not a library, it deserves to be on the list because of its sheer size and the popularity surrounding it. The Shaoyang Bookstore is located in China and is the largest bookstore that has ever been built. The interior of this building makes you feel like you are in the Harry Potter films as there are thousands of books and staircases.

This amazing place was opened in 2020 and has been gathering a large amount of attention. The architects who created this masterpiece have really created something magical that no one has ever seen.
Royal Portuguese Cabinet of Reading
The Royal Portuguese Cabinet of Reading is located in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and has to be one of the top libraries that has a distinctive look. It was even ranked fourth on the list of the world's most beautiful libraries. The library was constructed in 1887 by the Portuguese architect Rafael da Silva e Castro.

Since its construction, the people of Brazil have taken care of this library and have kept it in its original state. There are around 350,000 pieces of literature that date back to the early 16th century. When you enter this library, it makes you feel as if you were taken back into the 17th century.
Vennesla Library
The Vennesla Library and Culture House is located in Vennesla, Norway, and is a notable library that has a warm feeling to it. The library was constructed in 2010 and opened up the next year and since then the community of Vennesla has really enjoyed the interesting-looking library.

The public library has won several awards for the design of the building and is a place that people look forward to visiting when they visit Norway. There is a cafe that was built inside as well which makes this library a great meeting place.
Biblioteca Vasconcelos
The Biblioteca Vasconcelos is the most futuristic-looking library that has been designed and attracts people from all around the world to witness the site in person. Located in Mexico City, this library looks like something from a sci-fi film. It was opened in 2006 but had to close down a year later due to defects in the construction.

It was reopened to the public in 2008 and has been one of Mexico's finest architectural achievements. The library cost around $98 million to create but was worth every bit as Mexico has been given praise from all around the world.
Biblioteca Joanina
The Biblioteca Joanina is a fancy library that is located in Coimbra, Portugal and is part of the University of Coimbra. It is on the top of the list of the world's most beautiful libraries probably because of all the gold that has been inlaid around the building. There are 70,000 volumes of literature that are stored in the Biblioteca Joanina and it was constructed in 1728.

The library is in almost perfect condition and looks like it has since it was built. A strange fact about this library is that bats are used to eliminate any insects that come in during the night, so each night the worker puts leather covers on the books and cleans up the bat poop in the morning.
Baroque Hall Library
The Baroque Hall Library is located in Prague, Czechia, and is another beautiful library that has survived over the years. It was opened in 1722, is home to around 20,000 volumes of literature, and is part of the Jesuit University in Klementinum.

There are many remarkable ceiling frescoes that were hand-painted by Jan Hibel which depict different religious symbols and saints of the Jesuits. There is a large portion of the collection that has been digitalized and can be viewed on Google Books. The library is a must-visit if you are a fan of that sort of history.
Library of Birmingham
The Library of Birmingham is another striking library that sticks out among the others in the surrounding Birmingham area. The public library was opened in 2013 and cost the city around $250 million to construct. The library is now a flagship of the city and is the largest public library in the United Kingdom.

In 2014, the library had an outstanding 2.4 million visitors which made it the 10th most popular place to visit in the country. There are around 500,000 volumes available for the public to use and the lounging area is quite comfortable for some reading.
Salt Lake City Public Library
The Salt Lake City Public Library is located in the heart of Salt Lake City, Utah, and serves the community well. The old library location was far too small for the amount of literature the library was accumulating so in 1998, the building you see here today was erected.

It cost around $84 million to construct and has a very open feeling about it. This is a wonderful library that unfortunately has had its fair share of bomb threats and suicides, for some reason this building attracts a lot of unwanted attention.
San Diego Geisel Library
You wouldn't expect to find this amazing-looking library in Southern California. The Geisel Library is part of the University of California San Deigo and is used as the main building for the library. The building was designed by William Pereira, and in 1970 it was opened for the college to use.

The design looks like something you would see in Japan where some of the inspiration came from. There is a large collection of literature that includes over 7 million copies of books and digitalized items. Some notable pieces are the Southworth Spanish Civil War Collection and East Asia Collection.
State Library of New South Wales
The State Library of New South Wales is an extraordinary library that is located in New South Wales, Australia. Being the oldest library in Australia, the Mitchell Library was established in 1826 and has the largest collection of literature in the country.

The library was designed by Walter Liberty Vernon and the new building was constructed in 1910. There are around 5 million literature items that are stored here with some notable items such as the Australian Antarctic Expedition and the Shakespeare Folios. The library is open to the public and is the most visited in the country.
The National Library of Brazil
The National Library of Brazil is located in the city of Rio de Janeiro and is another library that Brazilians have taken great pride in. The library was first constructed in 1755 and has seen several renovations and add-ons over the years. Now the library is the largest in Latin America and ranks the 7th largest in the world.

Chicago Library
The Chicago Public Library is located in the windy city of Chicago and is home to a large collection of books. The library was first built in 1991 and has a unique ceiling that keep you looking at it.

Melk Abbey Library
The Melk Abbey Library is located in the small city of Melk, Austria, and is part of the Melk Abbey which is most popular for the tomb of Saint Coloman of Stockerau. The Abbey was first built in 1089 and has had an extremely long history, it is unknown when the library was built but the collection suggests that it wasn't too far off of the construction of the abbey.

The library has several medieval manuscripts that are quite rare as the abbey has been collecting pieces of literature for years. The amazing thing about this abbey is that it was never messed with and has been in pristine condition for years.
Codrington Library
The All Souls College Library which is also known as Codrington Library is located on the campus of Oxford. The library was constructed in 1751 and has served the college as a place of learning. The inside of the library looks very sophisticated and has the feeling of old England. There are around 185,000 items in the collection and the library is open to the public which is something that Oxford has never done.

New York Public Library
The New York Public Library Main Branch is located in the busy city of New York City and is one of the most recognizable libraries in the world. The building that you see today was built in 1906 and took around 1.2 million dollars to construct. There is a massive collection of books that tallies out to around 2.5 million and is home to some of the countries rarest pieces of literature.

This research library is world-famous and has been visited by many scholars over the years. The size of New York City needed a library that would be able to house a large number of people which the Main Branch pulled off.
Admont Abbey Library
The Admont Abbey is home to the Admont Library which is located in Admont, Austria. It is part of a series of Benedictine monasteries which is an order of the Catholic church and has been a group since 529 AD. The magnificent library was built in 1776 by the famous architect of the time Joseph Hueber.

The Admont Abbey Library's collection consists of around 70,000 volumes while there are another 200,000 volumes that are located in the monastery as well. There are a number of manuscripts that were left by Archbishop Gerhard who was the founder of the great monastery.
The Library of Alexandria
The Library of Alexandria is a newer library that has been erected in recent years and is quite the achievement of architecture. The library was built in 2002 and has been the centerpiece for the city of Alexandria. The library was built in honor of the world's largest library that was burnt down by none other than Julius Ceasar himself.

It took around $220 million to construct this beautiful library, there are four museums within the library which include Antiquities Museum, Manuscript Museum, and much more. There is enough space in the library that it can hold a total of 8 million books.
George Peabody Library
The George Peabody Library is one of the top libraries and most beautiful libraries in the world, located in Baltimore, Maryland. This research library is part of John Hopkins University and has been a part of American history since 1878. The library was created by Edmund Lind who described the library as a "cathedral of books".

There are around 300,000 pieces of art that are stored in this magnificent library and it has had some of the finest scholars do their research within these walls. The building was named after George Peabody who was a famous financier who had a large collection of books.
Library of St. Mark
The Marciana Library or Library of St. Mark is located in Venice, Italy, and has been a standing building in the Italian city since 1468. It is one of the oldest surviving libraries that has survived many years and is considered to be the world's largest library that contains manuscripts of many Italian scholars.

The library was built for Cardinal Bessarion who was a famous scholar that donated a majority of his texts to the library. There is a collection that consists of over a million different pieces of literature that you wouldn't find anywhere else in the world.
Monastery of San Francisco Library
The Monastery of San Francisco Library is one of Peru's treasures that is located in the city of Lima, Peru. This old library was built in 1674 and has been a centerpiece for the city of Lima. There are around 25,000 antique pieces of literature that have been stored here for hundreds of years.

Some other notable items that the library contains are 13 paintings of the Bible's Jacob with his twelve sons. There are also catacombs that are located underneath the library which contains the bodies of over 25,000 people, this is a very interesting library that must be visited.
Mafra National Palace Library
The Mafra National Palace Library is located in Mafra, Portugal, and is one of Portugal's most beautiful libraries that they have built. It was built in 1573 because the King of Portugal John V of Portugal wanted the library built in his name. It is one of the Seven Wonders of Portugal and is even a National Monument.

The library is home to 36,000 leather-bound volumes that have been in possession of the Portuguese for quite some time and have some of the country's best art pieces. The library was built and designed by Manuel Caetano de Sousa.
Bodleian Library
The Bodleian Library is located in the prestigious college of the University of Oxford that has been serving the University for some time. The library was created in 1602 in honor of the founder Sir Thomas Bodley. The Stadtbibliothek Stuttgart is a public library that is located in the city of Stuttgart, Germany and has been around since the early 1900s. Rijksmuseum Research Library

Library of Parliament
The Library of Parliament is located in Ottawa, Ontario, and has been a part of Canada's history for quite some time. The library was constructed in 1876 by the officials of Canada that wanted to make a library that was able to house most of the items that the Canadian government had. The original building was burnt down in the early 1900s but the building you see today is what was left standing.

The Beinecke Rare Book & Manuscript Library
The Beinecke Rare Book & Manuscript Library is located in New Haven, Connecticut, and has one of the world's largest collections of rare books. This amazing-looking library was created in 1963 and has been the home to thousands of books that you won't find anywhere else.

The library is part of Yale University's Hewitt Quadrangle and was designed by Gordon Bunshaft. The library keeps thousands of books safe from destruction as the storage is made specifically to keep these pieces of text safe. Some notable items that are stored here are the collection of American Children's Literature and many other collections.
Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology
The Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology is home to a unique looking library that has been around since 1972 and has been a great place of knowledge for all the students attending the school. Located in Dublin, Ireland, this Institute is one of the finest in the country and is home to thousands of books.

The school has won The Sunday Times Institute of Technology of the Year awards in 2004, 2007, 2015, and 2021. When you are a student in Ireland, this is one of the schools that almost every student looks forward to attending and the library just makes it that much better.
The Free University of Berlin Library
The Free University of Berlin Library is one of Germany's elite research libraries that is located in Berlin. It is ranked one of the top research libraries in the world and has an outstanding amount of research documents. The University was first founded in 1948 and has been the place of knowledge ever since.

The awesome thing about this school is the notion that tuition is free and students only have to pay certain fees along the way. The fees that are associated are nothing compared to regular tuition at a university, this is what makes Germany different from the rest of the world.
