Sports cards are a great way for fans to be able to own some memorabilia from their favorite players. However, it is a huge bonus when you come to find out that later those cards are worth a hefty price. Rookie cards and limited edition cards can easily fetch prices in the hundreds of thousands, scroll through this gallery and find out what the most valuable sports cards ever sold were.
Wayne Gretzky Rookie Card
Wayne Gretzky is also known as The Great One and he became a professional hockey player in 1979. O-Pee-Chee is the company responsible for manufacturing his rookie trading card, and the card fetched $94,162 at an auction in 2011.
Surprisingly though, the valuable rookie trading card wasn’t in pristine condition when it was purchased in 2011, as it had visible frays on its corners. That didn’t stop fans of The Great One from forking out big sums for his rookie trading card.
Michael Jordan’s Rookie Card
Michael Jordan is regarded by many as the greatest player in basketball history, so it comes as no surprise that his rookie card became so valuable. Manufactured by Fleer years ago in 1986, his rookie trading card was purchased for $100,000 in 2010 by a private collector.
After an analysis of nearly 6,000 Jordan rookie trading cards in circulation, only three copies of the legendary player’s rookie trading card remained in mint condition at the time the card was sold.
George Mikan 1948 Basketball Card
George Mikan’s 1948 Basketball card is the only one related to a basketball player that surpassed Michael Jordan’s in a category as it became the most valuable basketball card when it was sold for $218,550.
George Mikan played in three basketball associations, the Basketball Association of America, the National Basketball Association, and the National Basketball League. Mikan was known as Mr. Basketball during his playing career and was one of the game’s pioneer big men in addition to being ambidextrous.
Bronko Nagurski 1935 Football Card
It is rare that a football card becomes so valuable but Bronko Nagurski’s 1935 Football Card managed to break that jinx. Nagurski was a legendary fullback that played for the Chicago Bears, and he propelled his team to multiple NFL championships, one in 1930 and another in 1937.
It is as a result of his popularity and triumphs that National Chicle manufactured his football card in 1935, and one of the few that remain in good condition was sold for $240,000. Not too bad of an investment if you purchased it for retail.
Ty Cobb’s 1911 Baseball Card
Ty Cobb was one of the pioneer stars of baseball as a historic outfielder who played 22 seasons of professional baseball, mostly with the Detroit Tigers. People regard him as one of the greatest and most dynamic baseball players ever, and he historically doubled as a manager and a player for the Detroit Tigers from 1921 to 1926.
Photo Courtesy: [MediaNews Group/Orange County/Getty Images]
The General Baking Company manufactured the player’s trading card more than a century ago in 1911, making it a very rare card, and that is why one of the cards was auctioned for $272,980.
Lou Gehrig 1933 Baseball Card
Some know him for being a baseball player, others know him for the disease named after him. Regardless, his baseball card was manufactured in 1933 by Goudey and it is highly sought after by true baseball fans.
Gehrig was a legendary baseball player that played for the New York Yankees and won six World Series. His death turned to be tragic, caused by an incurable disease that would become named after him. His card is highly valued today, and one copy was sold for $274,950.
Mickey Mantle’s 1952 Baseball Card
Mickey Mantle became a professional baseball player in 1951, and Bowman manufactured his first baseball rookie card in the same year. However, his first rookie card wasn’t the most valuable, as another one manufactured by the same company in 1952 holds that crown, and remains the most pricey of the lot till today.
Photo Courtesy: [Matt Dirksen/Colorado Rockies/Getty Images]
An accident on the Atlantic ocean caused several copies of the cards to be lost forever and resulted in the surviving ones becoming so valuable that one copy was sold for $282,000, this is a very rare case where an accident caused the card to skyrocket, versus having the card stand on its own merit.
Roberto Clemente’s Rookie Card
A legendary homerun machine and right fielder for the Pittsburgh Pirates during his short career, Roberto Clemente scored 3,000 hits in his career and propelled his team to a World Series title in his final season in 1971 before his death as a result of a plane crash in 1972.
Photo Courtesy: [Gordon Chibroski/Portland Press Herald/Getty Images]
He died at 38 at the peak of his historic baseball career, making his baseball cards become extremely valuable. One of his rookie cards was sold for $432,690 in 2012 as a result, we usually see memorabilia go up in price when someone passes away and then comes back down after the news dies down. However, this card has remained valuable.
Babe Ruth’s 1914 Baseball Card
Babe Ruth is regarded as the most legendary baseball player ever and is also known as the original Yankee slugger, fondly called the Sultan of Swat. Even though he became legendary as a New York Yankee player, he began as a pitcher for the Baltimore Orioles, and soon became renowned for his fastball.
The Baltimore News issued his trading card in 1914, and it went on to be one of the most sought-after baseball cards ever. A copy of the card was sold for $517,000 by a private collector, and not many more have been known to exist.
Honus Wagner’s 1909-1911 Baseball Card
Honus Wagner’s baseball card is perhaps the most expensive sports card in history. The player’s T206 tobacco card was also the most valuable sports card ever during this time, a copy of the card was sold for a whopping $2.8 million.
Wagner was a legendary baseball player that also coached the sport. His historic T206 baseball card was manufactured by the American Tobacco Company and it is one of the hardest cards to find, as only 57 copies of it remained in 2013.
Mike Trout’s Superfractor Autograph
Los Angeles Angels center fielder Mike Trout was an eight-time MLB All-Star that was selected by the Angels in the 2009 MLB draft. People fondly call the star player Millville Meteor, and his sports card is one of the priciest in the world.
His 2009 Bowman Chrome Draft Mike Trout Superfactor is a record-setting one, renowned for its gold designs with a circular pattern, a copy of this legendary card was sold for $3.9 million.
Giannis Antetokounmpo Logoman Autograph
The Greek Freak or The Greek Wonder, basketball player Giannis Antetokounmpo is known for his incredible combination of length and skills. He was selected by the Milwaukee Bucks in 2013, and his 2013-2014 National Treasures Logoman Autograph became the most valuable basketball card on Earth.
Photo Courtesy: [Jesse D. Garrabrant/NBAE/Getty Images]
It became so expensive because it is rare, just like his rookie cards. A copy of Antetokounmpo’s Logoman Autograph card was sold for $1,857,300 recently.
Lebron James 2003-2004 Rookie Patch Autograph
While Michael Jordan is regarded as the greatest basketball player in some quarters, Lebron James is just as highly regarded by others because he has broken multiple records in the NBA and has won multiple Most Valuable Player awards in his long and illustrious career.
Photo Courtesy: [David Handschuh/NY Daily News Archive/Getty Images]
As a result, not one, but two of his cards are on the list of most valuable sports cards in the world. A copy of the Lebron James 2003-04 Exquisite Rookie Patch Autograph was sold for $1.845 million, not bad for a newer card.
Michael Jordan, Lebron James 2003-04 Dual Logoman Card
Arguably the two greatest players in the history of basketball, Lebron James and Michael Jordan are certainly two of the most talented players of the sport. Michael Jordan retired after 15 seasons and six championships while Lebron James has four championships and has played seventeen seasons in the NBA so far.
Photo Courtesy: [David T. Foster III/Charlotte Observer/Tribune News Service/Getty Images]
Their Dual Logoman card is so unique that only one copy of it exists, and it was sold for $900,000 recently. The card was in near mint to mint condition at the time of the sale. This isn't two surprising as not many items are sold today that feature the two greatest of all time.
1909-1911 T206 Eddie Plank
The Gettysburg Eddie as Eddie Plank was fondly called, was a player for the Athletics of Philadelphia for the majority of his career. He won the World Series Championship three times in his career and is a member of the Philadelphia Baseball Wall of Fame.
Photo Courtesy: [Mark Rucker/Transcendental Graphics/Getty Images]
The American Tobacco Company issued the baseball player’s T206 baseball cards series, and it is considered one of the hardest-to-find and most expensive cards. A copy of the 1909-1911 T206 Eddie Plank card was sold for $779,548.
Babe Ruth’s 1915-1916 M101-5 Sporting News
When discussions are held about the greatest baseball players in America, Babe Ruth’s name often pops up. Ruth won the MLB All-star twice and won the World Series Championship seven times, along with lots of other records and awards.
Babe Ruth broke multiple batting and home run records in his career and he has multiple baseball cards in his name. Lots of Babe Ruth’s cards are expensive and quite popular but the most expensive of the lot is the 1915-1916 M101-5 Sporting News card, one of which was sold for $717,000.
Luka Doncic Panini National Treasures Logoman
Panini National Treasures NBA Logoman cards are highly wanted cards due to their rarity. The 2018-2019 Luka Doncic NBA Logoman card is a good example of how rare and sought they can be, as a copy of the card was exchanged for $4.6 million at a private deal.
Nick Fiorella and Bolilo Lajan were the two men that originally owned this unusually rare and most expensive Luka Doncic card, they sold the card to private collectors in the private sale. Buying a card like this can be quite a gamble as Luka is still in the league, which means depending on how the rest of his career goes, this card can appreciate or depreciate.
Tom Brady 2000 Panini Playoff Contenders
The most expensive football card ever exchanged is the Tom Brady 2000 Playoff Contenders Championship Rookie Ticket Auto. It became the most expensive at the Lelands Auctions in April 2021.
Brady himself described the card as surreal and said it made him want to go check all his cards to see if one more of it remained in there. Brady was trying to make some money when he came out, and he agreed to a deal that paid him like 20 cents a card to sign cards. His most valuable card was sold for $2.25 million.
Kobe Bryant 1996-1997 Topps Chrome Refractors Card
The Goldin Auctions in March 2021 was when the most expensive Kobe Bryant card ever sold was exchanged for $1.75 million. Of course, the passing of The Black Mamba has taken its effect and has made all memorabilia of Kobe worth a lot more seeing how his merchandise will be very limited moving forward.
Photo Courtesy: [Andrew D. Bernstein/NBAE/Getty Images]
The grade of the prestigious card, The BGS Black Label 10 grade, is a rare and complex grade in cards and is regarded as a card in perfect condition. Another copy of the same Kobe Bryant card was auctioned for only about $58,000 on eBay.
1997 Michael Jordan Upper Deck Game Jersey Autograph
The jersey that Michael Jordan wore at the 1992 NBA All-Star game became iconic as it was the same one that Magic Johnson played in for the last time.
Photo Courtesy: [Nathaniel S. Butler/NBAE/Getty Images]
A historic card related to the game was also made, and it features Michael Jordan’s autograph and a sample of his jersey on it. Just 23 copies of this iconic card were manufactured, and every copy of the card was hand-numbered by Michael Jordan himself.
Lebron James 2004-2005 Upper Deck Ultimate Signatures Logoman Patch
Outside his rookie year, the 2004-2005 Lebron James Upper Deck card was the most expensive Lebron James card and the most that his cards fetched. This card fetched $1.29 million in March 2021, and it marked the third time that an NBA Logoman would be so high up on a valuable sports cards list.
The card was described as a vivid reminder of Lebron James’ Rookie of the Year triumph, one of the many triumphs and awards he would go on to amass in his career. Coming to the end of Lebron's career this card is only going to continue to go up in value.
Wayne Gretzky 1979 O-Pee-Chee PSA 10
Hockey cards don’t usually become so valuable that they’re featured on valuable sports cards lists but Wayne Gretzky’s O-Pee-Chee card is one of the few exceptions. That’s not surprising, considering the caliber of player that Gretzky was during his career.
The card is rare and valuable because only two are available in a PSA 10 grade, and so one of them was sold for $465,000 in August 2016, and it is projected to go for much higher the next time it is exchanged.
2012-2013 Anthony Davis National Treasures Logoman
Another rare sports card that crossed the $1 million mark is the Anthony Davis National Treasures Logoman card that was sold for $1,000,000 in February 2021.
Photo Courtesy: [Layne Murdoch Jr./NBAE/Getty Images]
The basketball star has a list of noteworthy achievements including an Olympic Gold medal, NBA Championship, NBA All-Star MVP, and an NCAA championship, all of which helped propel his card to cross the seven-figure barrier. The fact that he won an NBA championship in 2020 also helped.
Jackie Robinson 1952 Topps
A Jackie Robinson 1952 Topps card in PSA 9 condition didn’t cross the $1 million mark but it came quite close to doing so, selling for around $960,000, with 27 people bidding hoping to land the card.
Photo Courtesy: [Craig F. Walker/The Denver Post/Getty Images]
At the time, the card was only one of eleven Jackie Robinson cards that remained in PSA 9 condition, and none of the cards were PSA 10 so PSA 9 was as good as it gets when it comes to Jackie Robinson cards. The former baseball player broke down the nearly century-old barrier for color in the MLB.
1997 Michael Jordan Metal Universe Precious Metal Gems Green
The 1997 Michael Jordan Metal Universe card differs from his rookie card that was manufactured by Fleer and was sold for about $100,000. This was produced as one of the pioneer Precious Metal Gems cards.
The card is extremely rare because only 100 of it was produced, with 90 of them being produced with red foil, and the remainder sporting green foil. Of the 10 with green foil, just six got rated by PSA, and one of them was sold for $350,000.
Patrick Mahomes 2017 National Treasures Black RPA
The brightest and biggest young star in the National Football League is Patrick Mahomes. Of his cards, none have truly been PSA-rated yet, but with his ongoing success, I think it's safe to say that we will see more and more of his cards begin to pop up.
Even though football cards aren’t usually as valuable as basketball cards, a copy of one of his particular cards was sold for $840,000. The copy that was sold was in pristine condition and was a member of a highly collectible set, that included other rising stars.
2007-2008 Kevin Durant Upper Deck Exquisite Rookie Parallel
The market for Kevin Durant-affiliated content and cards fluctuates depending on the time of the season, the performance of his team, and a host of other factors. Durant more than most is a polarizing player who is either extremely loved or extremely hated.
On his return to the NBA in the 2020-2021 season after a year off due to injury, a copy of his 2007-2008 Upper Deck Exquisite Rookie Parallel card was sold for $780,000. The copy that sold for nearly a million dollars was rated a BGS 9, which is a significantly high grade for sports cards.
Joe DiMaggio 1941 Play Ball PSA 10
Joe DiMaggio made history in May 1941 at the Yankee Stadium where he connected for an RBI single. He had a magical season in that year, and so his baseball cards became highly sought-after, and rare soon after as the season was only a couple of years before the Second World War.
The 1951 Mickey Mantle Bowman card is so rare that a PSA-9 rated copy of it fetched a respectable $750,000 premium. When the Second World War hit people became less interested in cards and more focused on the war, so the card slipped under the radar, but as we know from experience those are the cards that draw the most attention in the future.
Pete Rose 1963 Topps Rookie Stars
Baseball players rarely come tougher than Peter Rose, who earned the nickname Charlie Hustle for his tenacious style of play and his considerable abilities at the plate.
Even though he had questionable ethics that caused his baseball career to be shortened, the respect he earned as a player persevered nonetheless. His Topps Rookie card is one of the most expensive baseball cards in history, and a copy of it was sold for over $700,000 in 2016, despite the player not being in the sport’s Hall of Fame.
1954 Hank Aaron Topps Rookie
It isn’t unusual for a historic player’s rookie card to become highly sought and expensive, especially when you’re Hank Aaron, the baseball player with the record of most All-Star Game selections at 25.
Aaron was a historic right-fielder that also won the World Series with the Atlanta Braves in 1957, record holder in total bases while also being the player with the second-most home runs. He also holds a number of other records in baseball like being the RBI all-time leader, because of all these achievements his rookie card fetched $645,000.
1968 Nolan Ryan Topps Mets Rookie Stars
Nolan Ryan’s rookie card was made in 1968, and it signified him playing for the New York Mets. A highly rated PSA 10 copy of the card was sold for $612,359 at Goldin Auctions. The rookie card has a portrait of Nolan Ryan and Jerry Koosman together.
Ryan’s first complete season with the Mets was in 1986, having missed most of the two previous seasons to injuries. He had a 3.09 ERA in 21 appearances in that season, which is pretty good coming off such a huge layoff.
2009-2010 Stephen Curry National Treasures Century Gold
Steph Curry is regarded as the most prolific long-distance shooter in NBA history, one that revolutionized the way modern basketball is played. That is the reason it’s not surprising that a rookie trading card of his was sold for $616,230 at a Goldin Auctions online event.
That card was signed by Steph Curry himself and it became the most pricey Steph Curry item ever when it was auctioned. It was sold in a 9.5-grade condition at the time of the auction, which to most is pretty much a 10. With the trajectory his career is on, the owner may want to hold onto that card tightly.
1910 Joe Jackson Old Mill Series 8
A 1910 Joe Jackson baseball card known as T210 Old Mill was auctioned for $600,000 at Heritage Auctions. The card had been in the possession of a family in North Carolina for over a hundred years before it was sold at the auction.
The card was discovered among several other sports cards by Ben Foster and his father Hayes Foster after they discovered a couple that were fairly valuable and decided to take a deeper look at the entire collection. Don't we wish we could all find items like that laying around our household.
1969 Lew Alcindor Topps
The 1969 Lew Alcindor Topps card is the lone official rookie card of Lew Alcindor, the man regarded as the most effective offensive player in the history of the NBA. Alcindor would later become known as Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and he became an unstoppable offensive weapon after becoming a master of the skyhook.
A PSA 10 graded copy of his rookie card commanded $501,900 at an auction sale, which is to be expected of the card of the player that won six championships and six MVPs. If you ask us it should have been worth well more than that, so we will see what it fetches if it ever pops up at an auction again.
1952 Willie Mays Topps
Willie Mays had never been featured on a Topps card until the 1952 Willie Mays Topps card, and it was manufactured only a year after his rookie card from Bowman.
A PSA 9 rated copy of this rare card was sold for $478,000. Willie Mays made history in 1954 during the World Series after making a highly improbable catch that would remain in the memories of baseball lovers perhaps forever.
1909-1911 T206 Sherry Magie Card
The T206 Sherry Magie card is one of the rarest cards of its kind, and also one of the most popular error cards ever, as we know error cards can go for a hefty price depending on when the error was caught and how many were actually distributed.
Its condition is rated a PSA8 NM-MT and its value is about $660,000. It is called an error card because Magee's last name was mistakenly spelled and so it is quite unique, as not many copies of the card have the same error on them.
1909-1911 Caramel Joe Jackson Rookie Card
Joe Jackson was banned from baseball for life during his peak because he was allegedly involved in the Black Sox scandal in the 1919 World Series, so not many baseball cards of him were produced and are in circulation, as the league tried to bury his name.
The few that were produced and remain are therefore incredibly rare and highly sought after. His caramel E90-1 rookie card is particularly rare, and so a copy of it sold for $600,000 at an auction. As much as leagues like to try to bury scandals like these, most of the time it just makes them more popular.
1909-1911 T206 Joe Doyle card
Joe Doyle isn’t the most popular baseball player in history, so it comes as a surprise that one of his cards would feature on a list of expensive sports cards.
Doyle was a pitcher for the New York Highlanders at the time his T206 card was being produced, so a couple of the famous T206 cards had an N.Y. Nat’l inscription on them that turned out to be an error. A PSA 3 rated copy of one of these cards was exchanged for $550,000.
1948 Leaf Satchel Paige Rookie Card
Satchel Paige’s rookie card is one of the hardest cards to find after the war because Leroy Satchel was a legendary baseball player that was with the Negro League for most of his career until he got a shot with the Cleveland Indians and was still successful with them, making the All-Star game twice despite being past his prime already.
A mint, PSA 8 NM-MT copy of this card was therefore sold for $400,000 because not all the cards produced were of good print quality. It goes to show the variety of reasons why cards can be seen as valuable even though the players involved aren't the flashiest.
1914 Cracker Jack Card of Christy Mathewson
Christy Mathewson's 1914 Cracker Jack card is a genuinely rare card that is highly sought after by collectors despite how difficult finding one can be.
There is a 1914 version and a 1915 version as well, with little difference existing between the cards presentations, the main difference being that the 1915 version featured a different pose entirely. The value of a 1914 PSA 8 NM-MT version of this card is about $250,000, the 1914 version of the card is the rarer of the two versions, so if you really wanted one, you may have better luck finding the 1915 version.
1948 Stan Musial Rookie Card
Stan Musial is one of the few baseball players with two rookie cards to his name. He has a 1948 Bowman rookie card and a 1948 Leaf rookie card, though the 1948 Leaf rookie card is rarer.
A PSA 9 mint-rated copy of his Leaf rookie card is valued at $250,000, and it differs because of its more attractive colors and distinct print lines. Steve Musial had a successful career with three MVP awards and seven batting titles as well.
1909-11 T206 CY Young card
Cy Young’s record of 511 career wins is incredible, and just might remain unbroken forever. Despite this, not everyone regards him as the best pitcher that baseball has ever seen even though his name is usually featured on the best pitcher in Majors annual awards.
Photo Courtesy: [Universal History Archive/Contributor/Getty Images]
There is a total of three cards in Young’s T206 set and the priciest of them is valued at $225,000 at PSA 9 mint grade as it is extremely hard to find in mint condition. Although Young doesn't get the recognition of being the best pitcher ever, he can at least know that he has one of the most valuable cards from a pitcher.
1933 Goudey Napoleon Lajoie
The 1933 Goudey Napoleon Lajoie card wasn’t originally among the cards in the former player’s Goudey set from 1933, and so it is a very rare card that only a select few have been able to say they have owned.
What makes these cards so valuable is the indentations with paper clips left on them by Goudey himself. PSA 9 graded copies of this card are valued at as high as $200,000. Lajoie won three batting titles and recorded a total of 3,242 career hits as well as a .338 average.
1952 Eddie Mathews Rookie Card
Eddie Mathews’ 1952 rookie card is the most recognized of the lot, regardless of where he features in the Topps set from 1952. His card is the final card in the 407 card set, and its value is increased by the difficulty attached to getting one.
A PSA 9 mint card is valued at $175,000. Mathews had a very successful career as a fearsome power hitter and he also formed a formidable home run hitting duo with Hank Aaron, one of the best the game has ever seen, who has also made this list with a card of his own.
1939 Ted Williams Rookie Card
Ted Williams had to serve in the military for five years right in the middle of his prime and probably would have had an even more remarkable career had that not been the case.
He is regarded by many as the greatest hitter in the history of baseball and had some astonishing career numbers including a .634 slugging average, a .344 batting average, and a .483 on-base average. His rookie card is worth about $150,000 in PSA 9 mint grade.
1952 Andy Pafko card
The 1952 Topps Andy Pafko card is an expensive card because it is highly revered among the postwar cards. Finding a Pafko card in good condition became something of a challenge following the war, and an untouched five-card pack of the cards was purchased by a collector who then found the only PSA Gem Mint 10 conditioned card in it.
The PSA 10 card has never been sold in PSA 9 mint condition, however, the card is worth $150,000. Although from a 9 to a 10 doesn't seem like the value would increase too much, there have been times where that gap is huge, so we can see this card in a PSA 10 going for more than four times that amount.
1909 T204 Walter Johnson Card
Walter Johnson’s 1909 Ramly Cigarettes T204 cards are unique courtesy of their elaborate decoration that makes them visually appealing cards. Walter Johnson’s old-school portrait is surrounded by attractive gold borders, though the borders are fairly prone to wear and chipping so finding these cards in mint condition can be challenging.
A PSA 8 NM-MT graded copy is valued at about $130,000. Johnson recorded 12 seasons with at least 20 victories and he also had two seasons with at least 30 wins, he is truly deserving of his card being covered in gold and selling for a high price.
1933 Benny Bengough
The 1933 Benny Bengough card is one of the most popular and celebrated baseball cards in history. The card is an attractive one that has an appealing star on it, completing its mainstream appeal.
Bengough was a part-time catcher for the New York Yankees and was a part of their historic runs in the 1920s. A PSA 9 mint graded copy of his card is valued at about $100,000 even though Bengough was never quite a full-blown baseball star during his career.
1895 Mayo’s Cut Plug Cap Anson
Cap Anson was perhaps the biggest player in his era during his career but very few of the cards that feature him remain today. One of them is the highly sought-after, one issued by the Mayo and Brother Tobacco Works of Richmond, VA.
This particular copy has black borders that can be prone to wear and tear and so it is hard to find in good condition. A PSA 9 mint condition grade of this card is valued at $92,500, not bad for a player whose memorabilia doesn't ring too many bells among fans.
